INSTRUCTIONAL UNIT PLANNING TOOL Grade/Subject – English IV – Epic Hero Quarter – 1st Unit Overview – As the students read Beowulf, they will find Focus Standards – RL1, RL2, RL4, RL9 W3, RI9 examples of Anglo-Saxon values, culture, history, and the evolution of the English language. Through the literature, they will discover literary devices such as kennings, metaphors, alliteration, and allusions. Essential Question – How are the Anglo-Saxons demonstrated and developed in the work Beowulf? Student Outcomes – (“I Can”) – The student will identify the characteristics of an epic and an epic hero. Instructional Texts – • Grendel by John Garner • Holt McDougal Literature: Grade 12 Sample Activities and Assessments – Students will apply the characteristics of the epic hero to Beowulf. RL1 Compare and contrast Beowulf to Grendel. RL2 Create a boast about themselves incorporating alliteration and kennings. RL4 Write a eulogy of Beowulf, which is performed utilizing poetic devices. W3 Define “myth” and discuss what makes Beowulf a myth. RI9 Identify the pagan and Christian elements found in Beowulf. RL4 Students will complete a formal assessment which includes but is not limited to characteristics of the epic hero and Anglo-Saxon culture.
