Unit Overview – As the students read Beowulf, they will find
Focus Standards –
RL1, RL2, RL4, RL9 W3, RI9
examples of Anglo-Saxon values, culture, history, and the
evolution of the English language. Through the literature, they
will discover literary devices such as kennings, metaphors,
alliteration, and allusions.
Essential Question – How are the Anglo-Saxons demonstrated and
developed in the work Beowulf?
Student Outcomes – (“I Can”) – The student will identify the
characteristics of an epic and an epic hero.

Students will apply the characteristics of the epic hero to Beowulf. RL1
Compare and contrast Beowulf to Grendel. RL2
Create a boast about themselves incorporating alliteration and kennings.

Write a eulogy of Beowulf, which is performed utilizing poetic devices.

Define “myth” and discuss what makes Beowulf a myth. RI9
Identify the pagan and Christian elements found in Beowulf. RL4
Students will complete a formal assessment which includes but is not
limited to characteristics of the epic hero and Anglo-Saxon culture. RI9
