Autumn 2 - A touch of France

Maths
Children work in ability groups and will have a
daily mathematics lesson to both consolidate
and develop their abilities in manipulating
numbers. Children will consider:
 The four operations – children will
answer questions involving addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division
and use a variety of taught strategies.
 Fractions – equivalent fractions,
adding and subtracting fractions and
finding fractions of amounts.
 Shape – both 2D and 3D.
 Statistics – children will focus on
gathering information and presenting
this in a variety of ways. Children will
also learn how to interpret given data
and graphical representations.
Learning multiplication tables is a key focus
and children should be practising these
regularly.
Music
Children will learn about the features of music and will learn
how to identify these when listening to a piece of music.
PSHE
Children will be encouraged to participate in whole class
and group activities and discussions to enhance and develop
their awareness of themselves and how their actions can
influence how others behave towards them.
French
Children will participate in the weekly French lesson and
continue to build upon their French language skills already
learnt. To link with our main topic children will also look at
French culture.
English
Through the daily English session children will
continue to develop their skills in reading and writing.
In addition children will participate in regular
speaking and listening activities and have the
opportunity to perform their work in front of an
audience.
Specific skills will be taught throughout the different
units and children will complete both a hot and cold
writing activity for each unit with lessons planned to
meet the identified learning needs of the class.
Spellings will be sent home weekly for the children to
learn and these will be tested. Children should be
reading a variety of different books of both fiction
and non-fiction regularly with an adult and discussing
these books to develop their comprehension skills.
Religious Education
This term we will be looking at the Creation stories of the Hindu and
Christian faiths. Children will learn about each and through discussion
they will compare and contrast them. As we approach Christmas,
later on in the term, we shall look at The Nativity.
Geography
We shall be learning about France this
term, and comparing the country to our
own. Children will learn about the
geographical features of each country and
about the cultures, customs and places of
interest.
Design and Technology
To link to our Geography focus for the
term we shall be looking at French food.
Children will follow the design process to
create their own flavoured croissants.
Computing
In addition to using the computer to research information to support
their learning in other curriculum areas this term children will
develop their computer programming skills using the Scratch
software.
P.E
Children will participate in both indoor and outdoor PE sessions. We shall be
learning the skills and rules to play football and children will participate in a
phase tournament. In indoor PE sessions children will focus upon music and
movement and will learn the movements of a dance routine that will
develop their co-ordination skills.
Science
During this half term our focus will be on
Electricity. Children will learn how we use
electricity safely to power common everyday
appliances and gadgets. They will then
investigate how electricity can be controlled
within a circuit by creating their own using
various electronic components. Finally
children will explore how electricity makes use
of both conductors and insulators.
