Most important substantial contributions I have made substantial research contributions in several fields, perhaps most notably in: (i) theory and methodology of social sciences, especially through applying and developing critical realism, which involves a transformative open-systemic account of causation; (ii) political economy, both via constructing political economy explanations of various processes and outcomes and in terms of developing and proposing alternative policies and institutional arrangements; and (iii) global political theory, centring around notions of security/peace, democracy and justice. The logic of critical social-scientific explanation, and a related theory of democratic emancipation, is the main thread connecting these areas. In the IS Web of Knowledge social sciences citation index, my works have been cited some 500 times; 2500 times in Google Scholar; and 7500 times in Google Web/URL. This indicates a growing international recognition. I have given dozens of guest lectures around the world and presented papers in more than one hundred international conferences and seminars, in several of them as key note speaker. I am particularly delighted that this recognition crosses disciplinary boundaries and is in no way confined to Political Science / International Relations. There are many nice reviews and praises of my academic works. My favourite quotation comes from a review of After International Relations. Critical Realism and the (Re)Construction of World Politics by Howard Richards: [This book is] “a rescue operation designed to rescue words like ‘truth,’ ‘reality,’ and ‘cause and effect”. Ken Booth has argued – citing an article I co-authored with Colin Wight – along similar lines that “Heikki Patomaki and Colin Wight were right when they recently argued that what is at stake between contending theories of international relations today is ‘not whether one should be a realist, but of what kind’.” Academic reviews characterize the 2001 book Democratising Globalization as a “superb theoretical analysis of the current financial system” and “an excellent, if ambitious, practical proposal for the reform of the global financial system” (Millennium: Journal of International Studies, 2001); and as an “impressive accomplishment” that, “by presenting solidly-grounded arguments, makes a constructive move forward in the debate about democratizing (financial) globalization” (International Affairs, 2002). My 2004 global democracy book A Possible World, with Teivo Teivainen, has been equally well received in the academia. Moreover, that fact that it has been published in five languages – Arabic, English, Finnish, Spanish and Swedish – indicates popularity beyond the English-speaking academia. The Political Economy of Global Security came out in late 2007 (dated as a 2008 publication). In his foreword, Richard Falk writes: “It is a book that needs to be read, studied, and reflected upon by all those who care about a better future for humanity, that is, hopefully and realistically, almost all of us!” In a book review in International Affairs, Mathias Albert notes: “This is without doubt one of the most intellectually rewarding IR books published in recent years”. Neoliberalism in Finland, published in late 2007, was written for the Finnish popular audience, although its perspective is global and future-oriented. With widely publicized reviews and commentaries – including some controversial ones – across the national media, it reached #3 in the list of best-selling non-fiction in the main bookshops. It was out of print in a few weeks. Following the equally successful second edition, a new third edition was published on-line in 2015. A more recent book on the Euro crisis, The Great Eurozone Disaster, has fared even better. The first Finnish edition reached instantly #2 in non-fiction. The subsequent 2013 Zed Books version in English stayed for months on the publisher’s list of top five best-selling books. It has also been translated into Greek and published by one of the main commercial publishers in Greece, Metaixmio. My popular and political writings have drawn attention both in the media and in the circles of public policy making, also beyond the countries where I have lived. Regarding recognition of this policy-oriented side of my work, the Scientific Board of the Progressive Economy may be worth mentioning. The Progressive Economy was launched the S&D group of the European Parliament, with a Sivu 2 major objective: generate a truly public and informed debate on economic and social policy at national, European and global levels and actively promote progressive thinking at academic and at political levels (http://www.progressiveeconomy.eu/scientificboard). The Board consists mostly of world-renown economists and sociologists.
