The customer service team operate

general enquiries per month.
Based in a dedicated operations

surveillance activities from 500-plus
cameras positioned throughout the
airport, provides public address
announcements and responds to
emergency calls.

speeches, performances
and a delicious dinner.
The birthday was also used as an
opportunity to unveil the finishing
touches of a book about the
Marae. Adorned with magnificent
photographs, the 32-page
promotional book covers the Marae’s
history including the stories behind
its name, and the carvings and
weavings. The publication has been
designed as an educational resource
and souvenir and will be available for
purchase by the end of the year.
www.aucklandairport.co.nz
It’s one of the most popular websites in New
Zealand’s travel industry and it’s sporting a
new look for Christmas! Auckland Airport relaunches its site www.aucklandairport.co.nz
this month with a funky new design, making
it easier for website visitors to find their
way around.
Right: The
website’s intuitive
navigational
structure follows
that of other leading
international airport
websites from
around the world.
Flight arrival and departure times are always the
most popular part of the website, so that now has
a prime position on the homepage. At the click of a
mouse, visitors can search by flight number, location
or airline or check the flight schedule in real-time.
Fancy a unique shopping experience when you get
to Auckland Airport? Now you can enjoy browsing
the shopping directory online so you know exactly
where the best deals can be found once you are
here. Check out the local weather, find the best
carparking deal using the parking calculator or
download a map to get your bearings on where

and take comfort in knowing all about the services
on offer before they arrive so they can ensure their
Auckland Airport experience is an outstanding one.”
Chief executive officer Simon Moutter says “As the
gateway to New Zealand it was imperative that our
online world reflected our uniquely Kiwi welcome to
the country. Travellers can tap into our online world
Stay tuned over the coming months as the site
continues to evolve with flight radars, online

and web cameras still to come.
$1 million
given to local
community
Left: The mini
laptops are now
a common sight
in the playground
at Rongomai
School. It’s all part
of an innovative
programme to raise
family literacy levels
by giving families
mini laptops so they
can write together.
In the last five years, the Auckland Airport
Community Trust has made grants totalling
$1 million to worthwhile projects within
Manukau City. From bean bags for homes
with very little furniture through to laptops
in the classrooms.
One recent benefactor from the trust is Rongomai
School, a small primary school in one of the country’s
poorest areas. With funding from the Trust, families have
been offered the chance to own a mini laptop on the
condition that they undertake some basic-level computer
training and that they commit to doing at least one piece
of writing on the computer with their children each week.
The laptops are a means of continuing the engagement
the school is building with its families, says principal Tina
Voordouw. “We are seeking to lift the level of literacy
in our homes because the more our students see their
parents utilising literacy, the more they will see a reason
for increasing their own competence,” says Tina.
Community leaders have emerged from computer
training classes and three parents have since became
members of the school’s Board of Trustees. Another
mother now organises monthly parenting sessions, which
have led to the formation of a walking group of 12 people.
These are amazing results from a small piece of
technology and a local grant-maker investing wisely
in the community it serves!
The Auckland Airport Community Trust was
established in October 2003 as a condition of the
Environment Court’s ruling to approve the airport’s
bid to build a second runway. Auckland Airport
contributes $250,000 (adjusted by the rate of the
CPI) to the Trust each year.

‘area of benefit’; 2009 grant recipients; how to apply
for funding for 2010; and its Annual Report, which

Richard Middleton
Salmon steaks with asparagus and beans

like a cordon bleu Christmas meal, but for
Inspector Richard Middleton it’s a Sunday
picnic at the top of a mountain, literally.
By day the airport policeman spends his time fighting
crime, running Auckland Airport’s police station and
ensuring the safety of all airport users, but during
the weekend he can be found climbing mountains,

and companies at the airport work well together
to prevent crime from happening. For example,
Auckland Airport’s operations team has assisted us
on five occasions recently to successfully apprehend
criminals. That’s great community teamwork.”
Having joined the airport police team in May 2007,
Richard says he enjoys the environment and the joint
community approach to preventing crime.
With 27 years in the police force, Richard brings a
wealth of experience gleaned from roles in the CIB,
robbery squads and organised crime units. He loves
the variety of roles available in the police force and
is passionate about “changing the police environment
to make life difficult for criminals.”

Downsizing an
airport fireman
Auckland Airport’s Dave Beaver knows a thing
or two about weight loss after recently losing
23 kilograms in eight weeks as part of a reality
TV series.
Earlier this year, the Airport Emergency Service (AES)
officer decided he needed to do something drastic to
lose weight and get healthier so he signed up to undergo
an intensive exercise regime and eating plan for two
months – while being filmed for national television!
For eight weeks Dave traded a more relaxed lifestyle and
a love of junk food for gym workouts twice a day and
a diet of salad and vegetables as part of the TV3 show
‘Downsize Me’. The results were stunning.
“I knew my lifestyle had become more lethargic over the
last year but after my first fitness test I was amazed at
how unfit I was. The eight weeks was incredibly hard at
the beginning. Keeping up with all the gym sessions and
strict nutrition plan proved a challenge but the end result
was totally worth it,” says Dave.
Right: Dave went
from 120kg to 97kg
and since filming
finished in June,
he has continued
his new healthy
lifestyle.
Throughout filming for the show, Dave was constantly
followed by a camera crew who recorded his progress
at home and at work. “My family and workmates
were fantastic throughout the process,” says Dave.
“Auckland Airport allowed the film crew to document
my training and workday at the AES fire station to show
the public what I faced throughout the weight-loss
challenge.”

36-hole minigolf course.
In preparation for the busy summer
season, owner Paul Mahoney and his
team have giving a few of the greens
a makeover. “We have transformed 11
holes over the last month to keep the
putters challenged and introduced a
haunted ship and firing cannon to add
some spice to the course,” says Paul.
He is a big kid at heart. A pro golfer
by trade, Paul swapped the big
courses for the fun and adventure
of the minigolf scene and hasn’t
looked back.
“The best thing about minigolf is
that anyone can play. Our clients
range from businesses to families
and grandparents. It’s fun for the
young and the young at heart!
We are geared up for team building,
birthday parties and Christmas

seamless travel between
Auckland Airport and Manukau,
was unveiled in November and
it can’t be missed!
Eye-catchingly striking, the
distinctive new orange colouring
enables travellers to spot it with
ease. The service runs on a route
via Papatoetoe, seven days a
week, and departs every half hour
throughout the day. Early-birds
can catch the bus in Manukau from
4:15 am each day and it runs until
10:45 pm. The bus gives airport
workers and travellers an easy and
cost-effective means of travelling
to and from the airport in comfort.

Recipe –
traditional
Christmas
mince pies
Nothing beats the smell
and taste of freshly baked
Christmas mince pies, straight
from the oven. This recipe uses
bought fruit mince but if you
are feeling domesticated you
can make your own. Makes 12.
Ingredients
• 1 cup flour
• 1⁄4 cup (60 g) butter
• 1 tbsp castor sugar
• 1 tsp cornflour
Right: Since
1983, Koru Care
has been bringing
a little joy into the
lives of children
like Liam Hopkins
from Alexandra,
whisking them
away from their
less-than-perfect
lives for a few
days’ holiday.
• 1 egg
• Water
• 2 tbsp sliced almonds
• 3⁄4 cup fruit mince
• Icing sugar
Method
Process flour, butter, sugar and
cornflour in a food processor
until fine and crumbly. Add egg
and process for 20 seconds.
If necessary, slowly add a little bit
of water while processing, until the
mixture forms a ball. Turn onto a
lightly floured surface and gently
knead until smooth. Cover with
plastic wrap and refrigerate for
15 minutes.
To assemble, roll pastry between
two sheets of baking paper until it
is 3mm thick. Cut into circles using
a 65mm round cutter. Place circles
Party
starts Koru
Care kids’
adventure
Four Californian traffic cops,
a US coastguard as well as
plenty of pizzas made sure 50
children with serious illnesses
or disabilities set off in party
mode for Koru Care’s adventure
to the US. Koru Care Charitable
Trust New Zealand celebrated
its 25th anniversary this year and
brought the CHiPs (Californian
Highway Patrol) members and
Los Angeles coastguard to
New Zealand to join in the fun.
The officers travelled to the US with
the children who had a fortnight
touring California doing all the
things kids love to do – like visiting
Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm,
in greased shallow patty tins.
Spoon 1-2 teaspoons of fruit mince
filling into each base. Sprinkle
sliced almonds over mince. Gather
extra pastry into a new ball and
roll out. Cut star shapes (50mm
diameter) to decorate the pies.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180˚C
for 10-15 minutes. Dust with icing
sugar. Enjoy!
