Starter
1. Which type of reproduction involves gametes?
Sexual reproduction
2. What is fertilisation? The fusion of the male
gamete nucleus with the female gamete
nucleus
3. Which type of reproduction results in
CLONES being produced? Asexual
reproduction

Artificial Propagation –
Learning Outcomes
• Name the 2 artificial methods of
propagation in plants
• State an example of a plant that
reproduces using each of the 2 artificial
methods
• State 2 advantages to artificial
propagation
A node is a
growing point
in a plant
You should dip the stem in
rooting powder
You should
cut BELOW a
node
You should remove the lower
leaves
The more leaves a plant has –
the more water it will lose!
You should plant the
stem about half way
down into the pot
Place the plant pot in a
plastic bag or a propagator
(to help keep water in!)
Put the following steps IN ORDER
Artificial methods of
propagation
Cuttings
1) Place the cutting into a pot and fill with compost
2) Cover the plant pot in a polythene bag to increase
humidity
3) Dip the stem in rooting powder so the roots grow
faster
4) Cut the stem below the node (growing point)
5) Remove lower leaves to reduce water loss
Layering
Layering
Layering is carried out on
plants that CANNOT be
separated from the parent
plant (IVY)
1. A small slit is
made in a stem of
the parent plant
The slit should be
directly below
the node
2. Dip the slit
stem into rooting
powder to make
the roots grow
faster
3. Peg the
stem under
the soil
4. When the new
plant has grown
into a vigorous
plant, it can
finally be
separated from
the parent plant
1. What do you think grafting is?
2. Do you think it’s natural or
artificial?
What is grafting?

• Another method of artificial
propagation
• Involves taking a scion and joining it to a
stock
• Scion – the desirable part of one plant
• Stock - root bearing part of a strong
plant
Why artificially propagate?
• Produces large numbers of identical new
plants
• If a particular variety is needed, they
can be produced easily and quickly
• Any tree can be made to grow flowers
or fruit of a known variety or quality.
