Second TRIMESTER Novel Response Activities
Novel Title: ______________________________________
Author: __________________________________________
AR Book Level: ____________
AR Test Check: Yes / No
DATE DUE: ______________
Directions: You will be completing three activities for your novel response. Have each
assignment completed in final copy form by the given due date and turn them all in
together, as one project. Each written response is to be at least one complete
paragraph of at least ten compound or complex sentences (excluding story activities,
which should be three paragraphs in length). Most of the activities will require you to
provide at least one text citation/quote from your novel, and must follow MLA
formatting for in-text citations
-use ELA Handbook or visit owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ for MLA guidelines
Select three of the following activities to complete:
1. Summary Write: Select a chapter from your book to summarize. Be sure to
include the chapter title and/or number in your summary. Remember that a
true summary includes all the key plot events that occurred in the section
you are summarizing, so don’t get caught up in the random details! This
should be a thorough paragraph that makes sense.
2. Advice Letter: Select a conflict/problem facing one of your story’s main
characters and write a letter advising them on how to proceed. Be sure to
outline the problem first, and then write a solid plan of action for how you
feel they should approach or solve the problem. This must be a thorough
paragraph that includes both the problem and the recommended solution.
Include one text citation/quote. Use MLA personal letter format.
3. Diary Entry: Select your favorite character from your novel and write a
diary entry as if you are that character. Be sure to write it from a first
person perspective and include the character’s name. This diary entry needs
to discuss a key plot event from the story, and should reflect how the
character feels about the situation. This must be a thorough paragraph that
identifies a major situation and reflects mood and tone. Include one text
citation/quote.
4. Character Sketch: Draw a character from your novel and create a
character profile providing the following information:
a. Character name
b. Character description (age, gender, species, physical characteristics)
c. Character motivation (what does this character want?) Explain the
character’s motivation and how it impacts the plot or another
character in a thorough paragraph.
*Be sure your drawing is detailed and neatly colored
*Include one text citation/quote.
5. Diorama: Select a particular scene from your novel and recreate it as a
diorama. Shoe boxes are great for this type of project. Try to use recycled
material in the construction of your scene. Be sure to label your scene with a
direct story quote that best represents what is going on in the scene; think
of it as a scene theme.
6. Story Sequel: Write a short story sequel to your novel. Be sure to keep the
main characters the same. Be sure that your story has a clear beginning,
middle and end. Review for spelling and grammatical errors before drafting
your final copy.
7. Plot Event Strip: Create a plot event strip representing a major event in
your novel. You must have a minimum of six boxes in your event strip. Draw a
detailed picture in each box that represents the event you have selected. Be
sure that the pictures are in sequential order so that we can see how the
event unfolds. This does not have to be colored, however it must be neatly
drawn and contain dialogue to help us better understand the event. Please
add a thematic title that encompasses the main theme of your event strip.
8. Persuasive Poster: Create a poster (8x11 or larger) advertising your book
(think about movie posters). Draw or print and paste an important plot scene
from your book, then write a persuasive slogan that will entice others to
read your book. Imagine that this is your first job assignment as a new ad
executive. Be sure that your writing is neat (either Typed or written neatly),
and make sure it is straight (use a ruler so that you will have a straight
ledge to work from).
9. Persuasive Poster Presentation: Present your persuasive poster to the
class. Be sure that you can speak about the merits of your book for a
minimum of two minutes. Your presentation should include the following
information: Book title, author’s name, main characters, basic story plot
(without spoilers), and your catchy persuasive slogan.
