Thermochemistry Practice Problems
Please complete the following practice problems in your Science Journal. Please show all
work, and then check your answers by scrolling to the bottom of the page. Please contact me
with questions.
1. How many joules of heat are required to raise the temperature of 550 g of water
from 12.0 C to 18.0 C?
2. How much heat is lost when a 640 g piece of copper cools from 375 C, to 26
C?
3. If 4786 Joules of heat are transferred to a 89.0 gram sample of an unknown
material, with an initial temperature of 23.0 C. What is the specific heat of the
material if the final temperature is 89.5 C?
4. How many joules of heat are necessary to raise the temperature of 350ml of
water from 1.00 C to 5.00 C?
5. Find the mass of a piece of copper when 8000.0 J of heat are applied, causing a
45 C increase in temperature.
Laboratory Data Problem:
Determine the identity of a mystery metal, if a 17.0 g sample of the metal that
was initially 100C was placed into a calorimeter that contained 100 g of water
at 25C. When the temperature reached equilibrium, both the water and the
metal were at 27.64C. Show your work and use the table of specific heats on
your reference table to identify the mystery metal.
