Information retrieval
The ability to skim a passage and select the
appropriate material.
Summarising:
Read a text, identify the key points and rewrite in
your own words – you need to be clear and concise.
Language Analysis:
Read a text, identify a range of rhetorical
devices/language techniques e.g. similes,
metaphors, emotive language, sarcasm and
hyperbole etc.
Use P.E.E. paragraphs ensuring that you analyse and
explain:
Why the writer has used the technique.
The effect on the reader.
Structural analysis
Analysing the ways that writers have structured
their literature in order to engage the reader.
Writing for purpose
You could be asked to write to describe, narrate,
advice, argue, inform or persuade. You must practice
doing all of these as any of them could come up on
the exam!
Comparison
Read two texts and compare how the writers have
presented a particular theme/idea/ perspective.

extracts (just ask).
