[email protected] Cramer Mountain Club Message from the Board Terry Dunn has resigned from the board of directors in order to spend more time with his businesses. Article VI of the bylaws gives the board the responsibility of appointing a replacement. At the September 14 directors’ meeting, Jim Tremoulis was appointed by unanimous vote. Terry was an original organizer of the Club and was appointed to the first board of directors and was then elected to a three year term in 2015. He has served as our president for one year and as treasurer for 1 ½ terms. Terry owns the business advisory firm Intellegy and also chairs advisory boards for Vistage, the world’s leading chief executive organization. He and his wife Debbi have spent countless hours working on behalf of the Club. Thank you Terry for your service. Jim Tremoulis was appointed to replace Terry. Jim and his wife Emily have lived on Foxes Trail for almost ten years and they are full golf equity members of the Club. Prior to becoming owner of his own business about eight years ago, Jim served in corporate business and management roles. He holds a B.S. from Bowling Green University and M.B.A. from Shenandoah University. --------------------The board unanimously passed a motion allowing equity members to upgrade to a higher membership classification by paying the difference in the initiation fee. This was done with an eye toward increasing the number of golf members and getting more play on the course, both of which are financial necessities. This will require a by-law change. Stay tuned for more information. --------------------In the near future, the Club will be transitioning to a new software system and hiring a part time business manager to operate it. From the beginning, we’ve been operating with a cumbersome software system that does not have the flexibility to allow us to do many of the things needed by a growing club. Property Matters has been operating the system and managing our back office operations. We will be hiring a business manager to assume their role. Hopefully, the transition will be seamless and complete by early next year. If you are interested in this part time job, or know someone who is, please contact treasurer Hugh Sales at [email protected] . This is primarily an accounting job and experience is needed. Cramer Mountain Club House committee chair Debbie Dunlap recently announced a new opportunity for members to become more involved in the Club. We have a very small staff and much of the work required to keep activities happening is being done by volunteers. More are needed and a group called the Mountain Crew has been formed. Just sign up for it and whenever extra help is needed, an email will go out. Answer the call just once or every time there is a need. It’s a chance to help and meet new people at the same time. --------------------------------------------Many members have provided us with only one email address, so our communications are only going to that person. If you want someone else in the household to receive our emails, updates and newsletters, please provide Joe with the address at [email protected] -------------------------------------------From time to time, this newsletter will answer questions our staff or board members are frequently asked. Here are two that have been asked recently: QUESTION: The hot weather continued after Labor Day. Why didn’t the pool stay open for weekends? ANSWER: This idea may seem simple enough, but is much easier said than done and is extremely expensive. Our contract with Carolina Pool Management to provide life guards and operate our pool specifies the pool close this year on September 5. Our insurance is also based on that schedule. The BOD and sports committee considered the possibility of extending for two weekends and thought it to be cost prohibitive. QUESTION: When will the locker rooms be available? ANSWER: It has taken a while, but they are nearing completion. The Board toured them prior to its September 14 meeting and they are looking good. Other than a few punch-list type corrections needing to be fixed, it was almost ready for use. Stay tuned The board is anxious to hear your questions and comments. Please address them to Joe at [email protected] and he’ll either respond or direct to the appropriate person. Cramer Mountain Club Tennis News and Updates In order to keep our four soft courts in tip top shape, there was a bi-annual resurfacing the week of September 19th. Approximately 8,000 lbs of Har-Tru material was added to the courts or about 2,000 lbs per court. Hank Avants has been rolling the courts regularly to pack down the new material and get our courts ready for two great events this month in addition to our core programs: Our 2nd annual Member/Guest tournament is scheduled for October 8th (women) and October 15th (men). Mark your calendars and recruit a partner today! Please see below for the full tournament details. The Gastonia NTRP Adult Open is a USTA sanctioned event scheduled for October 28-30. Cramer Mountain Club Cramer Mountain Club Superintendent Updates Ending out the summer of 2016 Cramer Mountain received a much needed 2.25” of rainfall during September which leaves the mountain in a 4.75” short fall year to date. Our most valuable resource is our water supply and the management of irrigation systems is a priority to provide best possible conditions for the golf course, tennis and club grounds. GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE AND STAFF GET TO KNOW THE STAFF: William Ashley, Operator / Spray Technician Also known as Big Bill. Mr. Ashley has been a golf course superintendent and member of the Carolinas Superintendents Association for 35 years. This past spring Bill went through a knee replacement procedure which when he returned I expected to receive a limited work document from his doctor. After only 5 weeks Bill returned with the letter from his doctors stating he was able to return to work without limitations. His desire to be a part of this operation and commitment to the vision and mission of The Cramer Mountain Club is not only appreciated by his supervisors but respected by his fellow operators. Residence: Rock Hill, SC Wife: Marilyn Highlight: This year Mr. and Mrs. Ashley crossed their 40th Anniversary Take the opportunity to speak to any of our staff on the course or welcome to visit us at the golf maintenance facility. Cramer Mountain Club GOLF COURSE CONDITIONS GREENS: Greens have performed well for the 2016 season. Green speeds were increased during club championship and member member day. During late September mowing heights are raised to prepare for the fall to winter transition. FAIRWAYS, TEES, AND APPROACHES The golf maintenance staff is in the process of applying fall and winter pre-emergence and hardening off fertilizer to the course. Over the past two years we have only applied these applications to selective areas due to drought conditions and general turf health. This is a major task for our staff and a major step forward to our overall management programs when compared to where we came from to where we are going. The merits to this procedure will result increased winter weed control as well as spring transition. CONSTRUCTION AND LANDSCAPING COLONIAL PIPE: Colonial Pipe has completed the necessary repairs to the fuel/oil pipeline along 14 fairway. Concrete cart path repairs have been completed and turf repairs are in process. Our staff worked well with Colonial to minimize damages and expedite the maintenance repair processes. Our goal is to create a positive and safe work environment as well as to provide the best possible golf course conditions during this necessary procedure. #8 POND: The process to renovate the pond on hole #8 has begun. This pond not only serves as a feature to the golf course but as a storm drainage retention pond for Cramer Mountain. Many members know this water feature has a tremendous history. Considering the age of the outlet structure and obstacles that may be encountered, the plan of action to renovate was extensively planned over the past year. The final stages are underway to complete the renovation. Updates to soon follow. OUR TEAM We pride ourselves on traits such as team work, leadership, continual education, loyalty, pride and motivation. These traits are our core values and will help us reach our vision and mission to provide the area’s finest golfing experience. See you on the Course, Paul J.
