‘Interesting, well prepared, challenging lessons.’
Arts, media and publishing
Have fun and learn some new skills that enable you to explore your more creative side. Whether
you want to revisit an old hobby or try something completely new, we have lots on offer across
Lancashire to tempt you. Our spring programme includes some interesting new courses – such
as Indian wood block printing and working with the medium of stone in our lettering in stone
workshop. Our popular sewing and dressmaking courses have more variety and include making
exotic cushions and an introduction to patchwork – why not come along and try something different
and make colourful creations in time for spring? Whether you want to make your own silver
jewellery, paint a portrait or learn to play the guitar, we’ve got something for you whatever your skills
and interests are.
If you are unsure about your level of ability then please call us on 0300 123 6711 and we will
arrange for a tutor to have a quick chat with you to work out which course is best for you.

Prepare Yourself for
Life and Work
independence and choice making skills too. All learners will
have the chance to undertake accredited qualifications to
match their strand choice and also English, Maths and ICT is
embedded into all learning.
Lancashire Adult Learning College is offering exciting
courses for adults with a learning disability. These courses
are for learners wanting to take their first entry into
developing skills for future employment, volunteering or
increased independence in everyday living.
Courses will be starting January 2016 and there are two
options to choose from:
Strand A - Preparation for Work. On this course learners
explore a variety of work related skills that are essential to be
successful in the workplace or when working as a volunteer.
Learners take part in a wide range of classroom activities
and also practise skills in a real life context by taking part
in enterprise and real work activities in college and locally.
Additionally leaners also have the opportunity to undertake a
work placement whenever possible.
Strand B - Preparation for Independent Living. This
covers everyday practical skills such as cooking, cleaning
and budgeting along with personal safety, getting out and
about on public transport, using the library, accessing other
community services and being an active member within the
communities they live in.
For both courses learners work towards building their
confidence, self-esteem and problem solving skills.
They take part in activities to support development of
communication and team working skills, increased
Each course runs two days a week, either Monday or
Tuesday (start date 18 January 2016) or Thursday and
Friday (start date 21 January 2016) at venues in Chorley and
Lancaster for between 20-30 weeks. Other areas may be
available subject to demand.
What do I need to join?
No formal qualifications are required. However, you will need
to be able to achieve a minimum of an Entry 1 qualification,
or above, during your year of study. You also need to be
motivated – either looking for a job or working towards living
independently - depending on which strand you choose.
Learners can then potentially progress into paid work,
volunteering and vocational courses in local FE colleges, as
well as increased independence in the home.
How do I apply?
To enrol to start in January, please phone 01257 516303 or
email [email protected] to request an
expression of interest form which we will send out to you.
Potential learners are then invited to take part in a ‘Discover
your Potential’ session before being offered a place on the
relevant course if appropriate.
Shorter courses are also available across Lancashire for
learners with a learning disability across Lancashire.
Work Clubs
Looking for a job?
Work clubs are three hour sessions for up to six weeks for those people who are actively seeking a job. You will get help and
advice with your CV, covering letters, application forms and interview skills. You will also be advised about relevant training
opportunities and courses. We will show you how to use Universal Jobmatch to search and apply for the latest jobs locally,
nationally and abroad. Our work clubs are free to attend and are run in places close to where you live.

For more information on the Financial Assistance Fund and
eligibility, please contact 0300 123 6711.
Time Credits
You can also pay for courses using Lancashire Time Credits.
Time Credits are a way of enabling local people to make a
difference in their communities and to local public services.
If a person gives one hour of time to a participating
community organisation, they earn one-time credit. That
credit can then be spent on a range of activities in the
local area, for example on a course, a museum visit, a
physiotherapy session or a show at the local theatre.
Time credits are similar in design to bank notes but have no
monetary value. Anyone can earn them, and everyone’s time
is always worth the same: an hour equals an hour. They can
be spent on a variety of courses across Lancashire. Please
note an additional charge will be applied for courses which
carry an exam fee or material costs.
To find out more visit chorley.gov.uk and
search for ‘time credits’.
