Foundational
Key Concept(s) addressed:
 Joining or separating sets to determine quantity
 Express stories with models, pictures and symbols
 Interpret problems correctly
 Identify the questions asked in a problem.
Key Skill(s) addressed:
 Model addition by joining sets of 10 or fewer
objects
 Model subtraction by separating sets of 10 or
fewer objects
 Explain how they solved the problems using
words, pictures, objects of numbers
 Tell stories involving addition and subtraction
Language addressed: how many added, how many are left, how many were taken away
Crafting:
 Model the first two Balloon Man stories as written so the students can see that the stories are continuous. The
students need to see the idea of adding and taking away pennies as the stories are told.
 Pass out the Balloon Seller picture and 12 pennies for each student.
 Teacher pairs up students to work in Think-Pair-Share partnerships.
Composing:
 Students listen to stories as given in the lesson and add or remove pennies as directed.
 As teacher describes new actions and asks new questions (i.e., How many does he have now?), students share
their answers with their partners.
 Work through the stories having the students complete the action as directed.
Reflecting:
 Ask students to tell how they solved the problem. Did they add some or take some away? How did they know
what to do?
What elements of this lesson are
concrete?
Moving the pennies
What elements of this lesson are
representational?
The balloon man drawing and pennies
to represent balloon.
What elements of this lesson are
abstract?
Describing how they solved the
problem.
Additional Notes:
 Partners may share one set of materials. Students take turns as action maker and describer.
Other Tips:
 Pass out materials after demonstration.
 Model continuous action problems similar to the balloon stories showing the idea of adding and taking away,
prior to teaching the lesson to build prior knowledge.
Assessment and Support Resources
Assessment
Observe students at work.
Kagan Structures
Think-Pair-Share
Note which students who:
* can add or remove pennies without counting
* need to recount every time
* are ready to do activity 2
* had difficulty with the task or concept
Ongoing Practice
Our Own Balloon Man Stories, Activity 2, pg. 391
Students create their own stories for the Balloon Man.
These can be illustrated and gathered to create a class
book.
Intervention
Present balloon stories again with one or two students at a
time.
Differentiation
Proficient students can record their action by writing a
number sentence such as 5 + ___ = 9.
