From the President’s Desk
Bill Connor
President and CEO
Summer brings the end of the school year
and a host of activities including family vacations, summer camp, baseball, swimming
and those ever-popular cook-outs. The summer months also mark the halfway point of
the year and that’s always a good time to review how well we are doing in accomplishing
the business objectives established by the
Board of Directors and management team.
I’m particularly excited to report that lending volumes have returned to levels not seen
in several years. Auto lending has been particularly strong with our spring 1% back promotion producing almost $50 million dollars
in new loans for 2,325 members. Continued
low interest rates coupled with local decisionmaking and on-site financing at over 144 Alabama dealerships made this our most successful loan campaign in quite some time. If
you missed out on the promotion, you can still
get a great rate on that car, boat or RV you’ve
been eyeing. Come by or give us a call today.
Speaking of great rates, we recently
launched our summer credit card promotion. Until the end of July, transfer balances
from your non-AFFCU credit or store cards
and pay only 1.15% APR until 1/31/15. If
you already have one of our America’s First
credit cards, you know what a great deal it
is. If you don’t yet carry one of our cards,
check the pull-out brochure in this newsletter and apply today. We have a card to fit
every need whether you prefer a cash back
card, a travel rewards card or a no-frills, low
rate card. We even have a special starter
credit card for young adults.
Aside from lending promotions, the
management team and staff have been
working diligently to find efficiencies within
our operations. Whether these efficiencies
are a result of new technologies, streamlined processes, staff training or more
advantageous vendor relationships, the
resulting cost savings are funneled back
into new products and services, pricing
strategies and service standards. All this
creates more value for the membership
which is what we’re all about.
One of the greatest operational efficiencies we have enabled in the past few years
has been the imaged statement and electronic delivery of statements. We create an
imaged statement for about 1/10th of the
cost of a mailed, paper statement. To date,
almost 34,000 members have taken advantage of this more secure form of statement
delivery, saving the credit union hundreds
of thousands of dollars. Our goal is to be
delivering most, if not all of our statements
electronically in the next few years. So if you
haven’t made the switch to eStatements yet,
let one of our helpful staff members show
you how easy it is.
We are very pleased with the results
the credit union has attained so far in
2014 and we look forward to more good
things to come during the latter half of the
year. Thank you for supporting the credit
union with your business.

•Color-code

•File regularly.

Do you know your net worth? Or
how much you spend each month,
and on what? Or how much you can
expect from your pension plan or Social Security in retirement?
A no to most of these questions puts you with
the majority of the population who have been too
busy with life to get a handle on their finances.
Make one request every four months in
rotation among the three credit agencies so
you can monitor your credit report year round.
•Put bills to be paid first at top of stack.
Fortunately, there’s a five-step action
plan to help you take control of your money.
•Mail bills seven to nine days before due date, or pay electronically two to three days before due date.
1. Set up a financial filing system
either manually or online. Create a per-
3. Size up your situation. Add the estimated current value of all assets, including
your home, car, personal property, savings,
investments, and retirement accounts.
Next, add all liabilities, including mortgage, credit card balances, and any other outstanding debt. Then subtract liabilities from
assets to figure net worth.
Then, make a list of income and expenses
by reviewing paycheck stubs, online checking
account information or your checkbook register, and credit card statements from the past
year. Finally, track spending for a month by saving all receipts or recording cash purchases in
a notebook. You also can find a spending plan
or money management software program that
can help organize spending by category.
•Use direct deposit and payroll
deduction.
•Use online banking/
bill pay / ACH
•Deposit checks with Mobile Deposit to reduce trips
and time.

sonalized filing system by labeling accordion
file pockets with broad financial categories.
Then label regular file folders with subcategories that fit your situation and file them into
the accordion pockets. For example, create a
Property & Casualty Insurance accordion file
and fill it with a Vehicle Insurance regular file
folder. There are also many online apps that
will allow you to do all of this electronically.
2. Gather records. Look through your
records to identify missing information. For
example, you need an estimate of your Social
Security retirement benefits. To request one,
visit ssa.gov or call 800-772-1213. Gather
copies of your health, disability, life, homeowners, and vehicle insurance policies, and
get a copy of your credit report.
You can check your credit report - the
summary of your credit activity that generates
your credit score - from each of the three major credit reporting agencies once every 12
months for free. Always make your requests
from the annualcreditreport.com website,
the only site sanctioned by the Federal Trade
Commission. Or, you can call 877-322-8228.
4. Chart a course. Set financial goals long term and short term - and figure how much
money you’ll need for each. Create a target saving and spending plan that meets needs using
your list of income and expenses. For a month
or more, track actual spending to see how
you’re doing, making changes as necessary.
5. Brush up on money management
basics. Contact or visit an America’s First
branch office and ask about available saving
accounts to get the most for your savings.

First Class Student Awards
America’s First scholarship winners for the 2013-2014 school year.
America’s First Federal Credit Union is excited to announce
the 2014 First Class Student Scholarship Awards. The recipients
are Laken Patterson of Thorsby High School, Timothy Guice of
Cherokee County High School, and Sydney Estill of Spain Park
High School. The three students each received a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choice.
The scholarship recipients were chosen from this year’s Student
of the Week winners. Hundreds of students from Central Alabama
who maintain a 3.5 GPA while participating in sports, band, volunteer
projects, and other activities were nominated for the award, and 28
of them were named Student of the Week. Each Student of the Week
winner then wrote an essay to be eligible for the $5,000 scholarships.
This is the 6th year for America’s First to sponsor the program in
partnership with ABC 33/40. Over the past six years, America’s First
has awarded 35 scholarships totaling $59,000. America’s First looks
forward to continuing this program in the fall. Check the ABC 33/40
website at abc3340.com beginning in August for more details.

AMERICA’S FIRST - Student Loans
A Better Way to Pay for College!
America’s First Federal Credit Union’s Student Choice Private Loan Solution.
Our Credit Union Student Choice private loan solution will help fill funding gaps that federal aid can leave
behind. As the cost of both public and private colleges
and universities continues to increase, federal funding has not kept pace. This growing gap between what
college costs and the financial aid available is causing
many families to resort to higher cost private student
loans to pay for higher education.
Here are some things to keep in mind
before applying for student loans.
Fill out your FAFSA – the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid should always be filled out as early
as possible, but it’s not too late to get yours finished.
Even if you think you won’t qualify, fill out the FAFSA
because most grants and federal loans will require you
to have a completed application on file. In most cases
financial aid is given on a first-come first-served basis.
Applying early means you’ll have the best shot at the
most financial aid possible. For more information visit
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Apply for scholarships and grants first –
•Membership – Some lenders require membership for
a student to be eligible for certain benefits. As a member of
America’s First Federal Credit Union, you’re eligible for all
the great perks of membership.
Apply for federal loans – After applying for scholar-
•Credit Scores – Expect to have your credit score
checked when applying for a private student loan. Some
students may not have enough credit history to qualify for a
loan and may need a co-borrower.
Look for “free money” first. High school counselors and college financial aid offices are great resources for information
about scholarships and grants.
ships and grants, get your federal student loans (Perkins
and Stafford) which are typically the least expensive and
safest loan option. Federal loans should be considered before applying for any alternate funding.
Evaluate alternative loan options – Most students
will need additional funding, so after you’ve exhausted
federal loan options consider a private loan like our Credit
Union Student Choice Loan. It’s important to compare loan
details to make sure you’re getting the best deal on your
student loan. Some important things to look into include:
•Interest Rates, Fees and Repayment – Interest rates
and fees vary greatly between lenders. Always compare
rates and fees on your loan. Look for a loan with low interest
rates and flexible repayment options like our Credit Union
Student Choice loan.

Don’t Get Hooked by a Phishing Attack
If you have Internet access, you may be under attack
- a phishing attack, that is. This high-tech scam involves
three components:
Spoofing is creating a replica of an existing Web site.
Spamming is unsolicited, or “junk” e-mail.
Phishing is the act of using spoofing and spamming to
lure unsuspecting victims, hoping to deceive you into disclosing your Social Security number, credit card and checking account numbers, passwords, or other sensitive information.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends the following tips to help you avoid getting hooked:
1. If you get a pop-up or e-mail message requesting personal or financial information, don’t reply or click on the link in the
message. Legitimate companies won’t ask for this information.
2. Be cautious about opening attachments or downloading files from email messages.
3. Never send personal information via email. Look for
a closed padlock at the bottom of your browser window, or
a URL that begins with “https” - the “s” stands for secure.
However, some phishers forge these security icons.
4. Review statements for accuracy as you receive
them. If they’re late, call the company to confirm billing
address and balance.
5. Use antivirus software and keep it up-to-date. Run
a firewall, particularly if you have a broadband connection.
Take advantage of free software “patches.”
6. Report suspicious activity to the FTC at www.ftc.
gov, and forward suspicious messages to [email protected].

ATM Safety Tips
ATMs are a great convenience,
but be careful about safety. You can
avoid becoming a victim by using
some good old common sense and by
planning ahead for ATM withdrawals.
Here are some tips:
1. Always pay close attention to the
ATM and your surroundings. Make
sure there is ample lighting, no overgrown shrubbery, and the ATM is clearly visible from the street.
2. Maintain an awareness of your surroundings. At night, make sure there is
ample lighting. Be wary of people trying
to help you with ATM transactions and
of anyone sitting in a parked car nearby.
When leaving an ATM make sure you
are not being followed. If you are, drive
immediately to a police or fire station or
to a crowded well-lighted business.
3. Do not wear expensive jewelry or
take valuables to the ATM.
4. Give people ahead of you space to
conduct their transactions. When you
use the ATM, make sure no one watches you key in your PIN number. You can
use your body to shield the ATM keypad.
5. Memorize your PIN; never write it
on the back of your card. Do not reenter your PIN if the ATM keeps your
card - contact the financial institution.
6. Do not use an ATM that appears
unusual or offers options that are not
familiar to you.
7. Never count cash at the machine
or in public.
8. If you leave your car to use the ATM,
be sure to lock it. When using a drive-
up ATM, keep your engine running, your
doors locked and leave enough room
to maneuver between your car and the
one ahead of you in the drive-up line.
9. Minimize the amount of time spent
