DR. FYLER [email protected] AP BIOLOGY 2016 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Hello and welcome to AP Biology! This course is designed to be the equivalent of a two-‐ semester introductory biology course usually taken in the first year of college. Throughout the course, you will become familiar with 4 major recurring ideas that persist throughout all topics and material. The 4 Big Ideas are: • Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. • Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis. • Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes. • Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties. The textbook we use in AP Biology is: Campbell Biology In Focus AP® Edition 1e 2014 with MasteringBiology and Pearson eText. As part of your summer homework you will be creating an account with MasteringBiology. PLEASE NOTE: Ø Your summer assignment is due on the first day of classes. For Part I: You will submit a detailed field journal. For Part II: You will submit the completed table below in addition to several activites that are submitted electronically via the MasteringBiology website. Ø Please be prepared to discuss your summer assignment during an informal class discussion. Ø You will take a test on the work you completed for Chapters 40,41 & 42 during the first cycle of classes. Ø Email me once you have completed PART I of this assignment ([email protected]) . In your email please list the 5 organisms in your list and let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding the assignment. PART I: FIELD JOURNAL WITH OBSERVATIONS: 25 points total Natural history is the research and study of organisms including animals, fungi and plants in their environment. In Part I of your summer homework you will act as a natural historian and observe life! Before you begin, collect the following: unlined paper (or small journal), pencil, small ruler, and camera. Find a rural area where you can sit and observe nature. SIT QUIETLY and tune into the life that surrounds you. Please feel free to involve family and friends while completing PART I of the assignment. Investigating nature is always more fun with a friend. 5 points DESCRIBE YOUR SURROUNDINGS in as much detail as possible. What is your geographic location? Describe temperature, light, and vegetation (for instance, depending on your location, it might be appropriate for you to comment on the proportions of deciduous trees, coniferous trees, low laying bushes, lichen on the trees, moss on the ground, etc.). Are there water sources close by? If so, describe them in detail (lakes, streams, ocean, freshwater, marine). 5 points Using common names, FIND and IDENTIFY 5 organisms. Finding organisms you are interested in learning about will make this assignment more fun for you. PLEASE NOTE: Of the 5 organisms that you identify, at least one must be an angiosperm and at least one must be an invertebrate. MVRHS: 2016 AP Biology Summer Assignment Page 1 of 3 DR. FYLER [email protected] 5 points COMPLETE A SKETCH AND PHOTOGRAPH each of the 5 organisms that you identify (please print out and incorporate photographs into your field journal findings). Do the best you can – this will be easier for some organisms than others. Be as detailed as possible in your diagrams and label every structure that you can identify. Make sure to note colors and textures. Add a scale bar to your diagram. 5 points Classify all 5 of your organisms to the most specific taxonomic level possible (the internet and field guides will be of great use!). Be sure to include all taxonomic levels possible. 5 points Construct a phylogeny that depicts the evolutionary relationships among your 5 organisms. At each branching point, label your phylogeny with at least one shared derived character for the group. PART II: MASTERING BIOLOGY: 60 points total (20 pts for each chapter) For Part II of this assignment you will be required to create a student account on MasteringBiology. After your account is set up you will log onto the STUDY AREA of MasteringBiology and compelte multiple activites covering the Ecology Unit (Chapters 40, 41, 42). After completing the activities listed you will be asked to submit answers electronically or to summarize the major concepts covered by filling in the tables below. TO REGISTER ON MASTERING BIOLOGY: 1. Go to the following website: PearsonSchool.com/Access 2. Follow the Simple Steps 3. YOUR NEW STUDENT CODE: SSNAST-SNELL-FINCH-BOTAN-CRUSH-CHASE CHAPTER 40 1.
