Disclosure Document Ms. Darcie Austin Email: [email protected] Kindergarten 2016-2017 Washington Elementary, Room 1215 (801)578-8140 ext. 1215 Grade Level/Class Description Kindergarten is a place where your child will have many opportunities to grow and develop emotionally, intellectually, and socially as critical thinkers, problem solvers, readers and writers. I am excited to welcome you and your child to our kindergarten family! Working together we can make this an exciting, fun-filled year for your child. Grade Level Goals and Objectives Utah has developed a core curriculum which outlines standards of learning that are essential for all students at each elementary grade level. The curriculum includes ideas, concepts, and skills to provide a foundation on which subsequent learning may be built. The curriculum for each grade level can be accessed on the Utah State Office of Education website at: http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/core. The Salt Lake City School District’s Kindergarten level curriculum brochure can be accessed at: http://www.slcschools.org/departments/curriculum/K-6-Curriculum-Brochures.php Instructional Materials A variety of resources and materials will be used in the classroom to teach the concepts outlined in the core curriculum across all areas and will include, but are not limited to, the following: Literacy: McGraw Hill Reading Wonders Program, along with a wide variety of children’s literature. Math: Houghton Mifflin Math Expressions, Investigations Math and a variety of children’s literature and math manipulatives. Instructional Practices Students will participate in a variety of whole group, small leveled and mixed-leveled group work for instruction and practice across all subject areas. Students will participate in shared reading and writing experiences as well as have many opportunities to work on their listening, thinking and speaking skills. Independent skills will be practiced at weekly learning stations. Course Requirements (Assignments, Attendance, Tardies, Discipline, etc.) Students are expected to attend school regularly, be on time, and come prepared to learn. Consistent, punctual attendance is essential to your child’s learning. *Studies have shown that children at this age need 10-12 hours of sleep each night.* Please make sure your child has a consistent bed time to allow for adequate rest. Please send a full-sized backpack to school with your child DAILY. Doors open at 8:10 am. When students arrive at school, they are to enter through the front doors and proceed to the gym. The playground will no longer be monitored before school. A school-wide free breakfast program, is new this year. Breakfast will begin at 8:30. Students will proceed from the gym to the cafeteria. They will pick up their breakfast and head to their classroom kindergarten to eat. (The first week of school, kindergarten teachers will meet their class in the gym to assist with this process. Any parent help in the gym and through the line during the first week of school would be greatly appreciated.) All students are expected to be in the classroom ready to learn by the 2nd bell at 8:40 am. All toys need to be left at home and are not allowed to come to school with your child. If your child arrives at school after 9:00 am, you need to check them in at the office for a pass to class. Dismissal on Monday through Friday is at 2:50 pm. Students will be dismissed out the kindergarten doors and need to be picked up at the kindergarten gate. Please notify me if there are changes in how your child gets picked up. Children not picked up within 10 minutes of the release bell will be taken to the office for pick up and/or call home. In addition to a strict no-bullying policy and in order to insure that everyone feels emotionally and physically safe at school at all times, Washington Elementary’s School Rules are: Be RESPECTFUL. Be RESPONSIBLE. Be SAFE. Our classroom rules will also be taught, modeled and practiced: 1. Follow directions the first time given. 2. Be kind – to each other, to yourself, to our school and classroom. 3. Be an active listener – eyes looking, ears listening, mouth quiet, and hands and feet still. A behavior reporting sheet will be sent home daily in your child’s folder with an explanation of behavior issues and/or color changes. Behavior issues will be discussed at school, but also please talk with your child about daily behavior and initial the behavior sheet daily. Assessments and Grading Procedures Clear standards and expectations are established for all students. To be on grade level, students are expected to be able to demonstrate knowledge for the information that has been taught with minimal assistance from the teacher. Students are allowed to do make up work for excused absences and late work is due the following week. The year is divided into three terms and a report card will be given each term. Each term there will be designated dates and times to meet with me to conference about your student. In addition, please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss your child’s progress and/or any questions or concerns you may have. If your child’s birthday falls during the summer months, you can choose another date to celebrate their special day (half birthday, etc.) Birthday treats and/or snacks must be store bought – no homemade treats as per district policy. Class Volunteers Many options are available for volunteering to help in and out of our classroom. Please sign up for the volunteer training classes at the office. Your help is welcomed and appreciated! School Supplies and Donations Donations are welcome and appreciated but NOT required. General school supplies (such as pencils, crayons, paper, markers, notebooks, folders, etc.) are provided for your child, though donated items are always welcome! Suggested items for donation: boxes of *tissues/Kleenex Clorox wipes Crayola watercolor paints dry erase markers Celebrations and Field Trips There will Kindergarten parties throughout the year that room parents can assist with. We love to celebrate birthdays in our class with a special birthday book and card. Please refrain from passing out birthday invitations at school unless everyone in the class is invited. If your child has a birthday during the summer or over a holiday, we will pick another day during the year to celebrate them! We will be going on a variety of field trips this year. We LOVE fieldtrips! We do ask for parent volunteers to act as chaperones for many of our field trips. We will send home notes in advance of these field trips as they become scheduled, and available chaperone times and options will be listed. We are a team, and together as a team of teacher, child and parent, we can make this a positive and successful year as we work together to ensure your child’s success!
