British Music the hidden ingredient

BPI
It is amazing to think that the BPI/MPA/UKTI LA sync mission has
reached its 10th Anniversary and it has been great to see it go from
strength to strength throughout that time. Ten years ago when this
mission first started digital was somewhat unchartered territory and
many of the tools available to the industry now would have seemed
unfathomable even then; it is great to see that the mission has
developed to take advantage of this digital revolution.
Selling music overseas has always been vitally important to British
record companies and artists alike. Since the 1960s British music has
sold consistently well around the world and the money generated
from sales and licensing is crucial to the ongoing investment in new
talent by British record companies of all sizes. Overall, representation
from British albums was as strong as ever in the US Charts in 2013 with
105 in the top 1,000, as high as any year since 2008.
Once again, we thank all our delegates, presenters and organisers
both in the UK and in the USA. The mission runs on the goodwill
and generous participation of all these individuals. For the delegates
themselves, I hope that this mission generates as much success as
its predecessors and that we continue to deliver great UK music to
one of the world’s largest and most exciting music and entertainment
markets…… Welcome to LA!

MPA
Over the course of its ten years the LA Synch Mission has become
firmly established with UK music companies for its impeccable
organisation, friendly support, enjoyable atmosphere and most
of all for the unrivalled access it grants to the most important
entertainment market on the planet. Not all trade missions will be
this enjoyable, but they should certainly aspire to be this effective.
The value of the Mission for UK companies is not limited to the
opportunities laid on over the course of a few days in LA, but are felt
long after the return flight has landed. One measure of the success of
the Mission is the number of companies who join the trip for a second
or third time, cementing existing relationships whilst always on the
look out to create new partnerships too.
Music publishers were always welcome to join the Mission since its
creation by BPI and UKTI. The MPA came on board as a partner in
2011 at a time when music publishers were becoming ever more
proactive in the search for synchronisation opportunities for their
songs, and since then we’ve been pleased to see the number of
publishers making the trip increase. Given that synchronisation deals
are often a triangulation between publisher, label and licensee it
makes perfect sense for UK publishers and record labels to land in LA
side by side, representing as they do, two sides of the same coin.
The British music they represent remains extraordinarily popular in
the global market, and we see no reason why the LA Synch Mission
shouldn’t continue to grow and flourish over the coming ten years.
This wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and expertise of our
partners, local organisers, the excellent speakers and presenters, and
most of all, the delegates. Enjoy!
The MPA is the trade association for the UK’s world-leading
music publishers. Our members represent more than 4,000
catalogues, including much of the world’s favourite music,
across all genres. The MPA exists to safeguard and promote
the interests of music publishers and the writers signed
to them.

When Carlo Cavagna and I first began discussions with the BPI to run
a Sync Mission to Los Angeles, I don’t think that any of us would have
thought that nine and a half years later we’d be preparing for the
tenth anniversary edition of this highly successful event!
Over those nine previous missions we’ve had three hundred and five
UK companies travel to LA with us, most of which have developed
great business connections with the tremendous music supervisors
and industry experts that give up their time to talk and meet with
the UK repertoire owners on our mission each year. However I think
that these supervisors would be the first to admit that this is not a
one way street and the fact that they keep finding time each year
to attend, is testimony to the quality of music that the UK delegates
represent and which has over the previous nine missions, resulted in
some great business outcomes with many many tracks being placed
into movies, television programmes, advertising campaigns and
computer games that are seen and played across the world.
The programme and success of these missions has inspired many
quotes, but a couple that describe it well are: “it’s like a diploma in
sync!” and “ it provides a fantastic grounding in the US sync business
and I’m sure we will be still benefitting from this mission for many
years to come.”
It’s quotes like these and the business that develops from the
connections and education that the companies receive that make
Carlo and the team in LA, plus everyone here at UKTI in the UK and
our partners at the BPI and MPA want to continue to improve the
mission each year and I’m sure that 2014 and our tenth edition of
this mission will be no exception.
Thank you to everyone who has participated over the last nine years
and made these missions the envy of many and to everyone who will
this and future years to come, thank you in anticipation.

I came on the Sync Mission in 2008
for Mogul & the Prawn, it was
great! Slight problem: we didn’t
really have any masters.
Fast forward 5 years. I’m no longer
The Prawn (long story), but for kicks
last year I tried to complete 52 new,
original music collaborations.
I managed 35.
So in 2014 I start Pink Lizard Music
to help me and the great people I’m
working with. Some of them allow
me to represent their other works.
TL;DR: small catalogue by 100%
independent writer-artists who
have something genuine to say.
Meantime I get cash by scoring
award-winning films, TV formats
and commercials, so I understand
a bit about music for picture. And
I have paperwork. I am ready this
time! Really looking forward to
meeting you.
