What is HallsNet?
HallsNet is the IT Network Services that operates in Cardiff Metropolitan University’s
student halls. The service provides a 10MB wired network connection in each bedroom,
a WIFI service and a TV service.
How can I connect my device(s) to HallsNet?
For most devices then you will just need to follow the automated process. Further
information is available at letsgetset.cardiffmet.ac.uk. If you need any further help then
please contact IT Helpdesk.
Can I connect my Games Consoles to HallsNet?
Yes you can connect them to the WIFI or to the communal network point in the Kitchen
area however you will need to register the device first. Please see
letsgetset.cardiffmet.ac.uk.
I have purchased a Streaming Media Device (e.g. Apple TV, Google
Chromecast, Roku) and would like to connect this to HallsNet.
Please be aware that these are consumer devices and therefore generally the
manufacturers do not support them unless they are installed on consumer / home
networks. Any support of these devices at Cardiff Met will be on a best endeavour basis.
You may register your devices using the same process as you would for a Games Console
by going to the http://letsgetset.cardiffmet.ac.uk/ page and following the Halls of Residence
Device Registration link. The streaming functionality may work for some of the devices however
we are aware that it is currently not possible for smartphone and tablet devices to communicate
directly with these devices and will be looking into this to see if we can find a workaround.
What should I do if I get problems accessing the service?
Please visit letsgethelp.cardiffmet.ac.uk for further advice and details on how to get
support on HallsNet or contact IT Helpdesk.
Where is the best place to get Anti-Virus software?
Please see the HallsNet Portal page on Anti-Virus Protection.
Can I use Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing software such as BitTorrent?
As stipulated in the Halls of Residence IT Rules and Regulations the use of Peer-to-peer
software for file-sharing applications is not allowed.
Are there any restrictions on what internet services I can access?
Internet services that, we believe, may cause a serious security hazard or service issue
have been blocked. If there are any services that you think you should be able to access
then please check with IT Helpdesk to see if these can be enabled.
Can I access Blackboard and other university web services?
You can access Blackboard and other university web services such as Prism and The Student
Room. If you see a pop up box requesting your username and password then please enter the
username in the form campus\yourusername e.g. campus\st12345678.
I am having problems getting a good WIFI signal. Is it ok if I connect my
own WIFI Router or Access Point?
The attachment of your own network equipment is prohibited and doing this may mean
other people experience problems with the service. If you have any WIFI issues then please
let IT Helpdesk know so that the problems can be further investigated.
Am I able to plug my own device into the TV in the communal areas?
You are able to plug your device into the HDMI socket on the wall next to the TV. You will
then need to press the AV button on the TV remote controls to access the port options and
then press it again to select HDMI2. This will allow you to connect any device with HDMI
connectivity and Apple devices through the use of an Apple Digital Adaptor.
Please do not attempt to connect devices directly to the TV.
