The University consistently makes the top 10 in the National Student Satisfaction survey and came third in the latest Times Higher Education student experience survey. The Student Union was also voted the best student venue in the country by the music industry’s Live! Magazine, and top student union in the latest Whatuni Student Choice Awards.” The Guardian University Guide 2015 The Architects’ Journal has voted our original residences – the Ziggurats – in the top 10 best examples of university architecture in the country. We offer over 3,800 fully furnished rooms in spacious on-site buildings that sit in 200 hectares of natural landscape, which may be why we were rated top 10 for accommodation in the latest Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2014. 7 An Inspirational Place There is something special going on here at the University of East Anglia and we want you to be a part of it. We believe that happy students are those settled into a comforting, friendly but stimulating environment. The big ‘50’ UEA has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary year Ker-ching! £58m Amount invested into the campus over the last year The University is home to a truly international community living and working on a campus combining stunning modern architecture with wide green open spaces. Ranked highly in the Times Higher Education 8 Student Experience Survey 2014, UEA has long been recognised for its commitment to ensuring a powerful academic, social and cultural experience for all who study here. Our award-winning accommodation sits just minutes from our impressive teaching and research facilities on a vibrant campus akin to an internationally diverse city, with shops, music venues, art galleries, libraries, cafes and a £30 million Sportspark all located on the edge of a beautiful, historic city voted the joint first safest place to live in the UK. We believe UEA provides a truly life-changing educational experience and we pride ourselves on the thousands of satisfied students who graduate each year. UEA’s twin commitments to providing the best accommodation and supporting the environment are reflected in the opening of our latest student residence. Crome Court (pictured above) is home to 232 students in an environmentally advanced building which uses 69 per cent of its energy from renewable sources and produces 95 per cent less CO2 than if it were built to normal standards. The new residence was just one element of a £58 million programme of investment in the campus during the University’s 50th anniversary year which also featured extensive refurbishment of the iconic Ziggurats, Norfolk and Suffolk Terraces. 9 ““The University consistently makes the top 10 in the National Student Satisfaction Survey and was voted top English university in the latest Whatuni Student Choice Awards.” The Guardian University Guide 2014 Our campus library has over 100,000 reference books 12 10 Mmm Fresh baked bread from our bakery Zigzag Campus Life An Ideal Location The University enjoys an enviable international reputation. Set in 200 hectares of parkland, the campus itself is central to the experience of being a UEA student and provides top quality academic, social and cultural facilities to more than 15,000 students. Built on beautiful parkland on the outskirts of the historic city of Norwich, our campus reflects the best of late 20th and 21st century British architecture. Our buildings have won more than 20 architectural awards and we have been at the forefront of low energy building development. We won ‘first class’ honours in the People and Planet Green League 2013. We continue to invest in our buildings with a multi-million pound programme to enhance teaching and research facilities and our student accommodation. The University has been in the top 10 English mainstream universities for student satisfaction ever since the National Student Survey began and the latest shows that our students are among the most satisfied in the country. We were recently ranked 14th among UK institutions by the Guardian University Guide 2015 and appear within the top one per cent of universities worldwide. There are excellent public transport links into the city and the University has negotiated a great deal with the local bus company on a range of bus passes which offer up to 65 per cent discount off the standard ticket price. Norwich has a mainline railway station with regular services to London and other parts of the country. Domestic and international services fly in and out of Norwich International Airport with more than 1,000 worldwide destinations available through Amsterdam, just a short connecting flight away. Services for Students Moving into residences, making friends, tackling your new course and taking advantage of the exciting opportunities on offer can be challenging. We recognise that not everyone takes all this in their stride so we provide a range of services to help students make the most of their experience of being a student at UEA. These are centred on the Dean of Students’ Office, a ‘one-stop-shop’ for students wanting to speak to someone confidentially about any matter causing them concern. There are advisers with expertise in student finances, effective academic skills, disability, emotional and psychological well-being, specific learning difficulties and the particular needs of international students. There is also a Multifaith Centre, careers service, medical centre, dental practice and a day care nursery all on site. www.uea.ac.uk/services/students “I think Norfolk is the most beautiful and perfect place on Earth.” Stephen Fry, actor, writer and UEA Honorary Graduate (pictured right) A purpose-built campus medical centre 15 Norwich and the Region Norwich is the perfect student city. Lively, and with a real character all of its own, it still manages to be friendly and accessible to students. The history of the city is visible for all to see with its Norman castle, two cathedrals and city walls but there are also striking modern buildings such as the stunning Forum which houses the Millennium Library and the BBC. 16 17 The city has superb facilities ranging from countless cafes, restaurants, retail outlets, shopping malls and entertainment venues. There are plenty of opportunities to catch live music or theatre and the city is teeming with modern and traditional pubs. The local football club, Norwich City, plays in the English Championship. Norfolk was recently ranked the joint first safest place to live in the UK and our students love Norwich so much that many stay long after graduation. Art and Culture The city has a wide range of well known and independent shops to explore There are four cinemas in Norwich including the art-house Cinema City and six theatres that regularly host performances of everything from Shakespeare to Jimmy Carr. There are also many museums and galleries in the city centre as well as annual events such as the arts-driven Norfolk and Norwich Festival. 18 1 Castle 2 Cathedrals 30+ Churches in the city alone 19 Bang! Shopping Norwich has been voted one of the top 10 cities for shopping in the UK, with large shopping centres, major department stores, the UK’s largest six-day-a-week outdoor market and the Norwich Lanes, a bustling area of distinctive independent shops and cafes. The compact city centre with its cobbled streets is a joy to walk around. A carnival and firework display every July for the Lord Mayor’s celebrations The Royal Norfolk Show is the largest two-day county show in the country 20 Food and Drink Norwich has plenty of choice when it comes to eating out. Japanese, Thai, Italian and Indian all sit alongside traditional English restaurants and pub grub. Celebrity chefs Delia Smith, Antonio Carluccio and Jamie Oliver have restaurants in the city. You’ll be pleased to know that many Norwich eateries also offer student discount. The city’s market and shops are bursting with good food. Nightlife Scenery Norwich has a thriving club and bar scene with new establishments popping up all the time. There are also a number of live music venues in the city such as the Norwich Arts Centre and the Student Union-run Waterfront, as well as the Nick Rayns LCR on campus. Norfolk is a unique county with some truly stunning locations. The Norfolk Broads are one of Britain’s most famous wetlands and the breathtaking coastline of North Norfolk is fast becoming a regular Hollywood location. Norfolk is great for exploration whether by train, car, bike or on foot. There are hundreds of pubs dotted around Norwich, which at one time was said to have had a tavern for every day of the year (and a church for every Sunday). Many pubs host comedy and quiz nights whilst real-ale fans will not want to miss the famous Norwich Beer Festival. I love Norwich. Great city, but not too big – great pubs and clubs plus a brilliant live music and comedy scene which I got obsessed with. Greg James, Drama Graduate, BBC Radio 1 DJ 21 Ahoy! Friendships become more established, responsibilities are formed and having your own place – and usually more space – will hopefully strike that perfect balance between study and leisure time. We have a huge amount of private rented accommodation available in Norwich You will usually have to source your own accommodation after your first year, although you may prefer to rent privately from the off. Both options are fine and no matter what you choose to do we are here to help you along the way. Norwich has a vibrant and competitive private rental market so finding the right place in the right location is not normally too problematic. There are several different options – shared houses, lodgings, student flats and studio apartments – depending on your budget. The average rent in Norwich is £270 per person per calendar month (plus utility bills), depending on the type and size of the property. If you are a full-time student not living within University residences, you are expected to live within a 50km radius of the campus. The Union of UEA Students operates Home Run Lettings to help you find safe, comfortable and fairly priced accommodation with responsible landlords in Norwich. As well as listing hundreds of properties, Home Run supplies a free House Hunting Guide and Union Advice Workers are happy to explain the implications of contracts before you sign them. The UEA Student Union also offers a home let service, a way of renting a property through the Union. Find out more at: www.ueastudent.com/homerun www.homerunstudentpad.co.uk 35 TO LET! Home Run can help you find accommodation 1 The Student Union holds a housing event each year How to Apply for Accommodation February Applications for accommodation are made via the online Accommodation Preference Form (APF) and are accepted from February onwards. Applicants with an unconditional or conditional offer who pick us as firm or insurance choice are prompted to apply for accommodation. July – August Postgraduate Students 36 If you join the University as a postgraduate student, are eligible and have applied for accommodation, and have met all your course entry criteria by 31 July, you are guaranteed accommodation. We will continue to accept applications for accommodation after this time, but late applicants will not be guaranteed a room. Undergraduate Students Applicants will need to complete an online Accommodation Preference Form (APF) by 31 July. After A level results are released, applicants with conditional offers either have their places confirmed or rejected by the University. If a course isn’t filled, available places are advertised and new applications are accepted via Clearing. If you join the University as an undergraduate, are eligible for accommodation and have met all your course entry criteria by the date specified in August, you are guaranteed accommodation. We will continue to accept applications for accommodation after 31 July, but late applicants will not be guaranteed a room. Accommodation Comparison Chart Main Allocation Period As soon as the A level results are released and an applicant formally accepts their offer, the admissions process is complete. It is at this point, usually during the week after A level results are announced, that we can allocate accommodation and you will be notified of an offer by email. You must respond to this accommodation offer within the time specified, normally three days. We will use the email address you gave on your APF so it is important that you let us know in good time if you change your email address. If you do not accept the room offer by the given deadline the offer, along with any guarantee of accommodation, is likely to be withdrawn. September Arrivals Week Accommodation offers will specify your arrival date. Your course may start before arrivals week, if so let us know. To take up your offer, you must arrive on the date stated on your licence unless you let us know in advance – if you do not you may lose your room. Postgraduate and International Arrivals If you are a postgraduate or you are coming from overseas, we have two arrivals days in September. We organise help with luggage and there will be a meet and greet service at Heathrow Airport and a shuttle bus for students arriving at Norwich Airport on those days. Home Arrivals If you are from the UK, you will be asked to arrive on either a Saturday or a Sunday, depending on your allocation and licence start date – so make sure you keep both days free! The Accommodation Contract Before you apply for accommodation in University residences, you should be aware that you will be required to sign a contract for your room when you arrive. The type of contract we use is a Licence to Occupy, and we ask you to sign this on your arrival when you collect your key. The licence sets out your room number, the exact dates of the licence period and the total licence fee.
