Year 9 Prejudice During this half term you are studying the theme of prejudice in your English lessons. This project is designed to consolidate your knowledge of the topic and to support you in developing key skills you will require during your GCSE studies. You should aim to spend about an hour a week on your project. 1. Research the Civil Rights Movement in America. Create a factsheet containing information about who was involved and some of the major incidents which took place (e.g. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks etc.) 2. Create a newspaper front cover reporting on the death of Martin Luther King. Make sure you include key features of newspaper writing (headline, 5Ws, quotes, facts, colour, images etc). 3. Write an analysis of your own newspaper article. Explain how you have used language for effect (e.g. alliteration, puns, formal/informal) as well as how you used the conventions of a newspaper. For each idea you should explain why you used it and the effect it is intended to have on readers. 4. Choose one of the following scenarios. Write a script for a play showing how the situation would unfold. (Extension-‐ get together with your friends and film a performance of your play.) a. A young man is laughed at by his friends when he tells them his ambition is to be a nurse. b. A group of young people are standing at a street corner. They are wearing sports gear, including hooded tops. A young couple deliberately cross the road to avoid them and can be heard saying that they “won’t risk being mugged.” c. A group of children are playing in their local park. A new girl comes to join them. None of the group will involve her because “she’s new and looks strange.” 5. Think about the modern world – identify somewhere where segregation is evident today (e.g. Gaza/ Israel). Create a speech detailing how you think the issues could be solved to end segregated communities in the world. Your project is due in on _____________________________________________________ Be as creative as you can with the activities and think carefully about how you present them. Good Luck.
