It was particularly designed with you the teacher in mind. The methods used are fun, easy and cost effective. I hope you will find it useful and apply the methodology with a positive and enthusiastic approach. Before we can begin any lesson we must understand the following: What is Mathematics? Mathematics is a language that makes use of symbols and notations for describing numerical, geometric and graphical relationships. It is a human activity that involves observing, representing and investigating patterns and qualitative relationships in physical and social phenomena and between mathematical objects themselves. It helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem-solving that will contribute to decision-making. ( quoted from the CAPS document) Every Mathematics lesson should be hour 24 minutes per day for Grades 1 to 3. Play crocodile Little crocodiles made of sticks White boards White board markers Kinaesthetic stage - experience concepts with the body and senses. Things are concrete - use real items The symbol > means greater than (the symbol < means less than). Example: 5 > 3 shows that 5 is greater than 3 64 Teaching Methods 7+4 Introduce this lesson in a fun way. Tell the story to get the learners attention. Once upon a time there was greedy crocodile that lived in a lake. He only ate numbers - the biggest numbers. He didn't care about the small numbers because he wants as many numbers as possible. Now involve the children by dividing the learners into 2 groups. • This is a whole class activity. • Groups mustn’t be the same in total e.g. 4 learners on the one side and 6 learners on the other side. • Choose a learner to be the crocodile. • • • • • • • • Do this rhyme with learners (kinaesthetic). Educator and learners: ‘ Crocodile , Crocodile what number will you eat?’ Crocodile: ‘The biggest one, the greatest one, and it will be sweet!!!’ The ‘crocodile’ must then chose the greater number of learners and ‘eat’ them. Learner acts as if he is about to eat the largest number. Do this a few times and then do an application activity at the desk. The one learners writes down 2 numbers on the white board and Other learner places the "mini" crocodile on white board . 45 98 Use cardboard for teeth and sticks to make a fun sign.
