CLASS OF 1937
CRANFORD HIGH SCHOOL
CRANFORD, NEW JERSEY
Foreword
We, the Class of 1937, having cleared the first
hurdle in the race of life, now look forward to
overcome and master all future obstacles with
the same determination and spirit that has
enabled us to arrive at this point—GRADUATION.
The future, with all its hopes, lies before us,
but the memories of our dear Alma Mater,
C. H. S., will abide and be cherished forever.

Farewell to C. H. S.
Words by Lila Mokarzel
(Music by Neal Walt)
With heavy hearts but learned minds
We part from Cranford's Gold and Blue,
In spirit never leaving us,
But held in memories of this adieu.
And now we realize that ne'er again
Can we regain those four fleet years
Spent with our friends and guides and books
Which roused our love, our faith, our cheers.
But drop the gloom that this end brings,
Instead to wake a pride that grows
Of chance to prove our worth as men,
Prepared for life; what it bestows.

Class History
Entering with a bang, and maintaining its membership, the largest oi our
freshman classes, the present honorable seniors, soon proved not the usual
bewildered edition to the great Cranford High School.
To facilitate an efficient administration, we chose at the end of this year
Norman Jones as President and Frank Hamm as the assistant-guide. Ellen
Specht kept our little red book and Bob Satter was our Chancellor of the
Exchequer. With these capable officers installed, and laboring, the next action
was the selection of that eminent motto "EXCELSIOR" and Blue and Silver as
the class colors.
Having survived this long, we entered the Junior year with Olindo DiFabio
as our very dependable head usher and William Cowperthwaite as his stooge.
Doris Wolf was the minute-taker and Joe Loveland the banker.
The Junior Plays, the main feature of the Junior year, were most successful.
One of these one-act productions, with its unusual talent, was entered in the
State Contest and succeeded in reaching the finals. Half the proceeds, thus
earned, were contributed to the noteworthy cause of Flood Relief and since
these plays were a financial success the sum was substantial. The Junior
Subscription Dance was quite a spectacle but a bridge party had to be given
by the P.-T. A. to make up the deficit incurred.
An additional feature of this year was the Junior-Senior debate in which
we received prominence for having the best speaker of the evening, though
we lost the decision. The Junior-Senior Prom received the hearty cooperation
of the Juniors, making it a success.
Entirely uninflated by the honor of being Seniors, we began our fourth
and most memorable year in C. H. S. by installing Frank Eaton as our President, Donald Levy as Vice-President, Helen Orrok as our Secretary, and
Richard Anderson the money-seeker.
To further a good reputation we presented the Senior Play, "The Seven
Keys to Baldpate" which ended with praise and an addition to our treasury.
This year we were more successful in the Junior-Senior Debate concerning the
public control of electricity, the decision being in our favor. One of our class
was also crowned as the best orator of the evening. We received, thus, the
much treasured cup and a good check for Five Dollars.
Eighteen of our most capable Seniors were elected to the National Honor
Society. Previously we had installed five in our Junior year. The Senior
Annual Staff was chosen by the class and the members and their works have
lived up to their standards as you will see.

The Sophomore Class has just been organized this year. At their first
meeting they chose their Class Colors, which are Green and Silver, and their
Class Flowers, Green and Silver leaves. As their motto they chose, "Ou bien,
ou rien" — Well done or not at all.
Their successful project this year was the presentation of the Sophomore
Class Barn Dance. Their work is not completed for they expect to do many
more successful things before they leave C. H. S.

Freshman Class
We present the members of the Class of '40, otherwise known as the
honorable Freshman Class. Given time and facilities of the new school they
will blossom into an original and efficient group. At present they are not
organized, but, as is the custom in the Sophomore year, they will elect their
officers, motto, and true colors. So start, ye energetic and merry students, on
your path of knowledge and soon you, too, will be looking back upon four
fleet years.
From the Seniors — to the Freshman — good luck!

National Honor Society
The aim of the National Honor Society is to further attainments in Scholarship, incite Leadership, build up Character, and promote Service by the
Students. Every year ten percent of the Seniors and five percent of the Juniors
are honored by this Society. The first requirement is to be in the upper quarter
of the Class and then the qualities of Leadership, Service, and Character
determine who is to be chosen. The Keystone and the Flaming Torch serve
as the emblem of the Society and the four initials C. S. L. S. stand for the four
traits necessary to members, symbolizing — Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. The members of this year's Senior Class who were chosen
in their Junior year are: Warner Lansing, Ruth Leavitt, Elizabeth Ummer, Frank
Hamm, and Ellen Specht.

Photography Clubs
The Photography Club gained considerably in popularity and membership
this year. It again had to be divided into two sections because of the irregular
school hours. Next year it is the hope of the clubs that some worth-while equipment can be bought with the money saved by that time.
The meetings were devoted to lessons in developing and printing films,
and to taking portraits, silhouettes and group pictures. Two guest speakers
talked on infra-red ray photography and the making of enlargements.

Debating Team
Although the Debating Team did not engage in out-of-town competition
this year, the annual Junior-Senior Debate was again held and was a most interesting affair. The topic was "Resolved, Electrical Utilities should be Governmentally Owned and Operated." The Seniors retained the P.-T. A. Cup and
the Five Dollar Prize.
The Stanger Medal for excellence in debating went to Kathryn Albert,
the third speaker for the uppermost classmen.
Both teams showed distinct skill in oratory and arguments, having been
coached by competent instructors.

The French Club has been very active. At the beginning of the year it
initiated twenty-five new members and later received four additional ones.
The meetings have been very varied, sometimes filled with noisy French games
and other times made most interesting by programs prepared by members.
The most memorable meetings were the "Olympic Race", the Bingo party, the
costume Christmas party, and the gay dancing meeting. This exciting year
was ended by the annual trip to New York which included a round to the
He de France, a French restaurant, and the theatre.

The Dramatic Club is again holding its position of popularity. Groups of
monologues were presented by the Club along with many plays.
The new members were given auditions before they were enrolled.
The group was given a knowledge of make-up and introduced to a speaker
who talked on costumes.
They have given several plays during the year which were coached by
members of the Club. The first one to be shown to the public was the popular
stage and screen play, "The Three Live Ghosts." It was filled with humor,
and delighted the audience immensely.

The outstanding feature of the year, as far as the orchestra and chorus
are concerned, can be considered the Operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan,

The meetings as a rule were taken up by singing American songs in
Latin and playing games with Latin words, but on several occasions special
events took place. There was a Christmas party held at the home of one of
the members which was very enjoyable and at one meeting an amateur
show was given by the talented members. Next year the club intends to
have a very active program as it will be more highly organized and

Football
The 1936 Cranford High School football team ended its campaign with
a .667 winning percentage.
The Blue and Gold eleven led by Captain Robert Swarts emerged a
moral victor in a scoreless tie with a highly-touted East Orange combine.
Cranford was kept at bay only by the fine punting of Hansen, East Orange end.
The week after the fray with East Orange the squad traveled to Dover
to tackle a much heavier and more experienced team. Dover's weight finally
wore down the Cranford eleven and scored two touchdowns in the last five
minutes to win 13-0.
After failing to score in two previous contests the Blue and Gold surprised
a fast Roselle team. Cranford scored its first touchdown of the year with
Nordstrom toting the leather. "Babe" Lee, Roselle's scoring ace, scooted
through the Cranford team and crossed the last white line. Roselle made the
conversion where Cranford had failed. All this scoring took place in the first
quarter. Not until the waning minutes of the game, when it was considered
lost by spectators, did the Cranford aerial attack begin to function. The ball
was worked into position, Klein faded, and heaved a long pass into the end
zone to Dick Borrell.
Playing in a virtual sea of mud the Blue and Gold combined outscored
a light but fast Roselle Park team. Cranford scored early in the contest and
Page Seventy-eight
THE
G 0 L D E N
" C " — 1 937
punted on first and second downs in the last half to emit a possible fumble.
Klein's pass again proved the margin of victory, but this time the pass was
snatched by Casey Poeltler for the six-pointer.
The next week again in mire, the Cranford combine, mainly through the
efforts of Roy Nordstrom, outpointed the Rahway team. After receiving a
pass from Klein, Roy wormed his way through Rahway's secondary and
crossed the goal line unpursued. Cranford scored again, and again it was
Nordstrom who placed the ball in the advantageous position. This time Klein
plunged over for the six points.
East Rutherford fell victim to the Cranford power the following Saturday.
The home team was first to score and did so after blocking a Cranford punt.
Cranford then scored after Klein's long interception run with Nordstrom carrying
the ball for six yards on the scoring mission. Loveland carried the ball into
scoring position for the second touchdown with the tally being scored by
Nordstrom on a plunge. Loveland converted by scooting around end.
Cranford then met its second defeat at the hands of Hillside and Babe
Wariczick. The Hillside team was unable to penetrate the Cranford wall and
alternately went to the air for their margin of victory. Wariczick threw a long
pass to Hanover for the touchdown. Later in the game Wariczick proved his
versatality by booting a field goal from the thirty yard line.
Bound Brook was the next victim for Cranford's win column. This game
was won by a superior aerial attack with Casey Poeltler doing most of the
tossing. Nordstrom scored both markers on semi-long jaunts. The large Bound
Brook line was outcharged and outmanned by Cranford's mules.
In the final game of the season the Blue and Gold combine was pitted
against Glen Ridge, the team which eliminated Cranford from state honors last
year. Cranford did more than avenge last year's defeat by outscoring their
rivals 18-7. The first touchdown wasn't long in the making. On the first play
after the kickoff, Anginoli played "sleeper." Bob Anderson dropped from the
line and whipped a pass to the hidden Cranford player who raced unmolested
down the sidelines for the touchdown. Cranford scored again before the half
ended and left the field at half-time with a 12-0 advantage. In the third period
the Glen Ridge attack functioned and they scored on a twenty yard run. The
conversion was also made and this made the Cranford team within easy hauling distance. The Blue and Gold attack began to work again and pressed
Glen Ridge into the shadow of its own goal-post. The visiting aggregation
stiffened and took possession of the ball. The Cranford forward stalwarts
rushed in and blocked the punt which was attempted. Porcella coming around
irom his end position scooped the motionless ball and fell over the chalk line
for the final score.
Fourteen seniors have played their last game in the livery of the Blue
and Gold, but they ended their careers gloriously by whipping the Glen Ridge
eleven.

Basketball
The 1936-37 Blue and Gold basketeers swished their way through a 17
game season — outscored their opponents 9 times and were outscored 8 times.
In the Union County Tournament, after downing Sacred Heart, the C. H. S.
Cagers were eliminated by Hillside. Little respect was shown the defenders
of the Group 2 State Championship when Bernardsville defeated them in the
first tourney fray.
Klein, Nordstrom, William Poeltler, Anginoli, Sayre, Erickson, George
Poeltler and Grau were the local "shooting stars." They amassed 475 points
through the season. Grau led the individual scoring with 94 points and also
bucketed the most points, 15, in one contest, the Chatham dribble carnival.
Close behind him came Paul Erickson with 90, George Poeltler with 83 and
Captain Martin Klein with 70.
The Cranford hoopsters defeated and were defeated but never were they
disgraced. Down to the last tick of the clock, regardless of the score, they
displayed that stern fighting spirit—the Cranford touch.

Baseball
Six veteran baseballers, Anginoli, Anderson, Grimes, William and
George Poeltler and Sayre, answered the call to uphold the prestige of Cranford
High on the diamond. Terry, Satter, DiFabio, Jones, and Pfeifer filled the
remaining gaps in the nine and the team swept through a successful season.
Especially noteworthy was the sterling pitching of Bob Anderson, who
was admitted to the Hall of Fame through his no-hit game against Hillside last
year and his one-hitter against the same team this year. His fast ball had
more smoke than a forest fire, his knuckle ball more curves than a bathing
beauty — as any opponent will attest. Anginoli and Grimes proved themselves future big league material with their timely extra base hits.
Mr. J. Seth Weekley made his debut as baseball mentor and continued
his record of turning out another "great" team.

Track
This year's track team opened the season with a victory when the team
placed first in the Penn relays. The foursome consisted of Dick Anderson,
Don Levy, Leonard Osterheldt, and John Shaw. Then the Blue and Gold
hoosiers captured the Newark meet. The Princeton meet occurred next on the
schedule in which the Cranford squad fared well. The sprinters were made
up of Don Levy, Leonard Osterheldt, Timmy Korner, and Jack Henning. In
the middle distance running John Shaw, captain, proved consistent. The
weight division was particularly strong being comprised of Martin Klein, Bob
Gonzalez, Bill Fredrick, Paul Erickson and Harold Davis. Dick Anderson proved
an all-round performer when in the Princeton meet he placed third, fourth, and
fifth in the low hurdles, broad jump, and pole vault respectively. Creighton
Pfeifer was the team's best javelin hurler and James Laurel was a steady
contestant in the high jump.

good printing
like good clothes
is a mark of distinction
) It is from the stationery that a customer often forms his impression
of a business firm. As much thought and effort must be put into
the design of the letterhead as in the wording of the letter itself.
JWe are experts in this as well as in other fields of printing. Our
craftsmen are experienced in designing and producing all forms
of printing from calling cards to complete catalogues.
)The 1937 "Golden C" is a product of our commercial printing
department. Let us estimate today on your printing needs.
To the staff of the "Golden C" and
members of the Class of '37
we extend our best wishes
for a future life filled
with good health,
happiness
and prosperity.
