Millennials and the Church
As summer approaches, we all remember summers of the past and the excitement that we felt as kids
to get out of school for the summer. How would we spend the summer? How do kids spend the summer
nowadays?
Young people have both changed and stayed the same over the decades. The group of young people
that are reaching adulthood now are often called the millennials (born between 1984 and 2002).
Christians have pondered what to do with this generation because they have some characteristics that
are different from previous ones. Barna research says the following about millennials:
First, Barna research shows nearly six in ten (59%) of these young people who grow up in Christian
churches end up walking away from either their faith or from the institutional church at some point in
their first decade of adult life. Second, the unchurched segment among Millennials has increased in the
last decade, from 44% to 52%, mirroring a larger cultural trend away from churchgoing among the
nation’s population.
Third, when asked what has helped their faith grow, “church” does not make even the top 10 factors.
Instead, the most common drivers of spiritual growth, as identified by Millennials themselves, are prayer,
family and friends, the Bible, having children, and their relationship with Jesus.
The researchers seem surprised that family and friends are what drive growth in faith and yet was there
ever a time when they were not major influences? Mentors are needed for young Christians and they
generally should not be the pastor. Barna continues describing millennials who stay in the church:
Those who stay were twice as likely to have a close personal friendship with an adult inside the church
(59% of those who stayed report such a friendship versus 31% among those who are no longer active).
The same pattern is evident among more intentional relationships such as mentoring—28% of
Millennials who stay had an adult mentor at the church other than their pastor, compared to 11% of
dropouts who say the same.
Why is it that so few young people come to worship? While it is easy to blame the style of music or
something superficial, one reason that young people are not active in church is that they don’t have
Christian mentors and friends in the congregation. That is not to imply that there is one “silver bullet” to
solve the problem but it is hard to deny the impact that friends and mentors can make.
Instead of saying that the youth leader or the pastor should be “the friend” to our youth, what about just
befriending one of our youth or a new family in our church? Instead of a “program,” let us just reach out
one person at a time. We used to have a campaign called, “each one, reach one.” Maybe that is one
small step, not toward solving the “problem,” but to building disciples one person at a time. Maybe those
small steps will result in something good.
Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Christian Burg

Message from Our Principal ~
There are mainly 7 values that we should be teaching our children so they can grow into Godly men
and women. In their formative years their faith is mainly shaped by the actions of their parents. Here
are the 7 values we need to teach them about:
Faith- Parents can teach their kids how to put their faith in God by always reminding them that every
provision and blessing comes from God, whether they're asking for a certain toy or receiving their
day's meals.
Prayer- It's extremely important that kids are always given an example to follow in leading a life of
prayer and devotion. Practices as simple as regularly praying before meals, and taking some time in
the evening to pray for each other go a long way in building the value of prayer in children.
Compassion- As important as it is to teach justice and discipline to our children, we must also
constantly portray and explain compassion to kids and regularly practicing visible compassion.
Hunger for God’s Word- We need to teach and demonstrate how to love God’s word.
The great news is that the Bible is so full of knowledge that children can learn and apply to almost
every area of their life. However, what use is it for parents to teach kids how to read their Bible when
they themselves are not in love with God's Word.
Integrity- When parents and guardians teach our kids integrity, they don't have to worry about what
their children do behind closed doors. The best ways to teach integrity is to always remind them that
even if people don't see their deeds and misdeeds, God does and what they do in private heavily
affects what they do in public.
Humility- Pride isn't all that bad. It helps build confidence in children, but just like anything else in this
world too much of it can be detrimental. Parents teach their children humility best by explaining how
our confidence comes from God and not ourselves.
Competence- Competence is one of the most important keys to future success for our children. The
best way to teach children competence is to encourage them to pursue a craft or art that they can
become good at. Don't limit their options, but rather allow them to explore.
In Proverbs 22 verse 6 it teaches us to "train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old
he will not depart from it."
May you strive to instill in your child(ren) these key values. May they honor you in their walk with the
Lord!
Blessings on your summer!
In Christ,
Mr. Moran

Stewardship Devotion
You have probably been involved in planting a vegetable or flower
garden, and you've realized that the more seeds you plant, the more
plants you get. The Apostle Paul used the analogy of sowing and
reaping (planting and harvesting) in relation to money. He wrote,
"Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and whoever sows
generously will also reap generously" (2 Corinthians 9:6).
You know that, if you plant a seed here and there, you'll get
a plant here and there, and the result will not be especially pleasing.
Sowing sparingly yields sparse results. So it is with money. If you
give generously, you will reap for yourself and others great benefits. Paul went on to say, "Each
man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for
God loves a cheerful giver" (vs. 7). In other words, you should give willingly, not because it is a duty
or because your parents make you give. Of course, the church can use money given under duress
just as well as that given freely! Unfortunately, you will not be blessed because, as Paul wrote,
"God loves a cheerful giver," not the reluctant giver. Giving because you're forced to is actually
sowing sparingly, even if you give a large amount.
Giving and expecting rewards for giving is not really giving; it's trading. Yet God longs to
give us blessings, and those blessings just seem to follow when we carry out His will. "God is able
to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will
abound in every good work" (vs. 8). Look at all these blessings poured on the cheerful giver!
 All grace will abound to you! There will be no end to the grace God will give you in your
life.
 In all things, at all times, you will have all you need!
 You will abound in every good work! God will continue to use you in building up His kingdom.
What are you waiting for? Go do some sowing!
Let us pray: Dear Father in heaven, thank You for calling me to be a cheerful giver. Thank You
for Your promise to provide for all my needs, and even beyond, so that I will always have the means
to give. Forgive me when I hold on too tightly to "my" money and clear my vision so I can see the
needs of others as more important than my own wants. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings on your Stewardship Journey!

Scholarship Funds Help Families: There are at least three ways to help families send their children to
St. Martin Lutheran School; direct family assistance, donation to the Student Aid Fund, or donate to one
of the three established scholarship funds. We have several families who need financial assistance in
order to provide their children with an elementary school Christian education. One, you may want to
directly help a family you personally know is in need. Or you may simply make a donation to the Student
Aid Fund. To do so you send a check to the church and school office. The principal will use the money
to help families in need. Another choice may be donating to one of the three established scholarship
funds that exist already. Contact the principal for more information about these three funds:
 The SSG Warren S. Hanson Memorial Fund
 The Arno and Eleanor Olson St. Martin Scholarship Fund
 The Dr. Harry & Florence E. Caskey Education Scholarship Fund

School Board and staff to better prepare for the upcoming year. If you have not pre-registered your
child(ren), you may do so by contacting the office. The Board would also like to extend an invitation to
all St. Martin members who are not currently sending their children to our school, to come and see the
school, talk to the Principal, Mr. Moran, and to other parents whose children attend our school. Contact
a Board member to find out what St. Martin Lutheran School is all about. We strongly believe our faculty
and staff offer not only academic excellence with a Christian impact, but a personal interest in each child
and family. The following Board members support our school and would be happy to accept any inquiries:
Blair Sawall – Chairman, Jamie Kriewaldt, Lee Genskow, Gary Hagberg, Elly Brzezinski, and Samantha
Mauel.

would not have our library kept current, students would not be able to work on the computers as


