Symptoms
Irrational, uncontrollable, and disruptive anxiety
Excessive, global, and persistent anxiety
Sudden episodes of extreme anxiety, escalating rapidly in
intensity
Frequent and unexpected panic attacks
An irrational fear of a specific object or situation
Extreme, irrational fear of experiencing a panic attack in a
public situation
Extreme, irrational fear of being embarrassed, judged, or
scrutinized by others in social situations
Chronic and persistent anxiety symptoms in response to an
extreme physical or psychological trauma
Intrusive, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and/or urges to
perform certain actions (compulsions)
Chronic disruptions in mood
Extreme and persistent feelings of despondency, worthlessness, and hopelessness
Chronic low-grade feelings of depression
Episodes of depression that recur during the fall and winter
and remit during the spring and summer
Alternating depressive and manic episodes
Moderate but frequent mood swings
Inflexible, maladaptive, stable personality traits
Pervasive pattern of disregarding and violating others' rights
Instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and
emotions, and marked impulsivity
Extreme disruptions of awareness, memory, and personal identity
Inability to recall important personal information
Sudden travel away from home, extensive amnesia, and
identity confusion
Extensive memory disruptions, along with the presence of two
or more distinct personalities
Severely distorted beliefs, perceptions, and thoughts
Delusions and/or hallucinations, but virtually no cognitive
impairment, disorganized behavior, or negative symptoms
Highly disturbed movements or actions, waxy flexibility
Disorganized behavior and speech, and flat affect
Combination of symptoms of the other three types
