CP5204 Advanced Techniques: Group Therapy (3 units) Instructor: Robin Gayle
Theoretical and practical approaches to working with groups are applied to therapy groups, support groups,
self-help groups, task groups and time-limited groups. Individual and group patterns are explored as they
emerge in the class group and factors that facilitate or hinder constructive group interaction are examined.

CP 5208 Advanced Techniques: Brief and Strategic Psychotherapy (3 units) Instructor: Robin Gayle
Models of Brief and Strategic Psychotherapy are presented and practiced for use within private
psychotherapy practice, community, and clinical settings. Applications are made to individuals, couples,
families, groups, and Managed Care Organizations.

CP 5206 Innovative and Alternative Psychotherapies (2 units) Instructor: Robin Gayle
Varieties of innovative and alternative psychotherapies are presented both theoretically and experientially
and are contextualized within Transpersonal theory. Included are Somatic
psychotherapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Eriksonian Hypnotherapy, Breathwork, Eye Movement
Desensitization, Gestalt Psychotherapy, Eco-Psychology, Psychosynthesis, and Integration Therapy.
Ethical, cultural, and spiritual concerns are addressed.

CP 5294 Fieldwork in Counseling (3 units) Instructor: Robin Gayle
Application, development, and refinement of assessment, counseling, and consultation skills is facilitated
by group consultation and liaison between the University and the approved fieldwork site: a government
entity, a school, college or university, a non-profit and charitable organization, or a licensed health facility.

CP 5222 Research in Human Systems and Treatment Outcomes (3 units)
Survey of the philosophical, epistemological and methodological components necessary to conduct
research and articulate treatment outcomes within the field of Counseling Psychology. Qualitative and
quantitative research designs will be covered along with their methods of data analysis and concomitant
ethical guidelines.

CP 5701 General Master’s Proficiency Project Development (2 units)
The General Master’s Proficiency Project (GMPP) provides an opportunity for those students who wish to
obtain a General Master’s in Counseling Psychology to integrate, apply and demonstrate their knowledge
through the development of a Master’s Project pertaining to a special field of interest within Counseling
Psychology. The project may comprise research, experience, design, service learning or other contributions
to the field of Counseling Psychology which can be documented or presented.
o
CP 5995 General Masters Seminar (3 units)
Application of skills in the student’s chosen volunteer placement is supported through this seminar by
group consultation and liaison between the Seminar leader and the approved volunteer fieldwork sight.
Development and refinement of the Master’s Project pertaining to a special filed of interest within
Counseling Psychology is facilitated. Research skills are applied to the project and volunteer hours
documented are documented and applied as well. After two semesters of Seminar, the project is completed
and presented to faculty.

MBASL 202 Cross Cultural Communication: Global and Local Organizations (3 units) Robin Gayle
A culturally sensitive inquiry into the historical and current forces that shape businesses around the world
deepens participant understanding of diversity in multi-cultural or globally dispersed organizations.
Communication skills are developed for the delivery of culturally congruent services to different groups
both locally and internationally.

Dissertation work.

EWP 801 Dimensions in East-West Psychology II (3 units) Instructors: Gayle, Delaurius, Lipman
Second in a three part series of core courses in the Ph.D. program designed to introduce important
methodologies of East-West Psychology. Methodologies include: Western and modern cosmology, NonWestern cosmologies, cultural psychology, gender studies and culture, and universal methodological and

EWP 898 Doctoral Dissertation Committee Work (1-6 units) Instructor: Robin Gayle
Mentor Doctoral Dissertation work by helping students assess and articulate their research abstract,
theoretical orientation, methodology, analysis of statistical data, conclusion and publishing. Sit on
approximately four committees an academic year.

Students are assisted with formulating topics of interest into a draft thesis or project proposal encompassing
both epistemological and methodological concerns.

A consciously feminist hermeneutic is applied to the history of religion to discern hermeneutic and
methodological issues that both impede and justify a feminist theological interpretation of early
Christianity.

PS 2175 Pastoral Counseling (3 units) Instructors: Roy Fairchild, Robin Gayle (assisting)
Theory and practice of Pastoral Counseling is applied to marriages, families, grief, crisis, and the self.
Selected literature in the field of pastoral counseling is related to practice through role playing vignettes
before videotape and two-way mirror (SFTS Lloyd Center location) and receiving feedback during review
of tapes.

HRSS 182 Prayer, Fatigue, and Spiritual Burnout (2 units) Instructors: Flora Wuellner, Robin Gayle

Western principles underlying prayer and meditation are studied and applied to a variety of healing
situations. Both epistemological and practical concerns are addressed through biblical critique, holistic
theories, and the Christian mystical tradition.
