Hospital Divided dose ------Dulcolax / Miralax Bowel Prep Instructions
If you have chronic constipation (or take pain meds that cause constipation) we may need to
use a more powerful bowel prep. Please call for further instructions. 635-7321 or 785-3500.
Shopping List--- None of these products are prescription—can be purchased at any drug store or grocery store
 Four Dulcolax 5 mg (bisacodyl) laxative tablets—not stool softener (may use generic-cheaper and come in smaller package)
 1 Bottle of Miralax powder (238 grams OR 255 grams)
 Gatorade, Pedialyte, Powerade or any other electrolyte drink –Two 32 oz bottles (no red or purple) (Diabetics use Propel or
other sugar free drink, preferably an electrolyte solution) You will mix ½ bottle of the Miralax in each bottle.
DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE:
 ONLY Clear Liquids all day, the day before the procedure. MUST DRINK AS MUCH FLUID AS POSSIBLE
DURING THE DAY TO PREVENT DEHYDRATION. Do not drink just water— anything clear including
any electrolyte solution would be excellent. (see list below)





Mix HALF OF THE THE 238 (or 255) GRAMS OF MIRALAX POWDER with 32 oz of Gatorade or electrolyte
solution of your choice. Mix in a pitcher or add to the gatorade bottle. Refrigerate if you like cold drinks. (Diabetics
use Propel or other sugar free drink, preferably an electrolyte solution/ check blood sugar often and adjust sugar as
needed)
Between 12 noon and 2 PM take 4 Dulcolax tablets—do not chew tablets—swallow whole.
Anytime between 2– 6 PM start drinking the Miralax/Gatorade mix. Drink one glass every 15-20 minutes as
quickly as tolerated (approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours), until all of the Gatorade/Miralax mix is gone.
Be sure to have a bathroom available after starting the miralax mixture. You may have multiple bowel movements
starting anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Your bowel movements may be frequent, explosive and liquid
(this is to be expected)
After completing the prep, stay on clear liquids ----NO SOLID FOOD TILL AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE.
THE DAY OF YOUR PROCEDURE:

At least eight hours before your scheduled procedure time, mix the other half of the bottle of Miralax with the
other 32 oz bottle of Gatorade (or other electrolyte drink) and drink as you did the night before. Must be done
with prep at least 6 hours before your scheduled procedure time, therefore: for example, if scheduled for a
7 AM procedure probably need to start drinking by 11 Pm or 12 midnight and must be done drinking the prep by
1 AM -- if scheduled for 8 AM procedure—done drinking by 2 AM, etc. –
After finishing the Miralax you may have clear liquids up to 6 hours before your procedure. NO SOLID FOOD.
You must stop drinking 6 hours before your procedure or the procedure will be cancelled or delayed.
MEDICATIONS ( MORNING OF YOUR PROCEDURE):
 If you take heart, blood pressure, or seizure medication routinely –-- the morning of your procedure you may take the
medication up to 2 hours before your procedure with small amount of water.
 Insulin—take ½ dose depending on AM glucose level.
 Oral glucose medication—DO NOT TAKE.
Clear liquids include:
(NO RED OR PURPLE)
Most any fluid you can see through (no alcohol)
Water
Clear fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape, etc)
Lemonade, kool aid or crystal light drinks (no red or purple)
Jello (lemon, lime or orange) No fruit or toppings
Diabetics use sugar free drinks
Coffee or tea without milk or non-dairy creamer.
Gatorade or other clear electrolyte solution
Clear broth, bouillon (chicken or beef) No noodles or solids
in soup
Pop (regular or diet) Ginger ale, Sprite, 7 Up, (no coke
colored type drinks)
A word about bowel preps:
A bowel prep is the only way to effectively clean out the bowel (if there was another way, we would use it).
Use soft toilet paper, hemorrhoid wipes and or Desitin or A&D ointment for skin irritation.
