Sort 4- Suffix Match

Suffix Match
Number of players: 2 to 4
Materials:
• 2 sets of 32 playing cards
Directions:
1. Print two copies of pages 2–4 so there is a total of 64 cards for the game.
2. Shuffle the playing cards and stack them facedown in the middle of a table.
Each player draws five cards from the deck. After players decide who goes
first, play proceeds clockwise.
3. The first player lays down a card faceup, says the word, and names the
suffix (for example, “earlier, -ier ”).

4. The next player must lay down a card with the -ier suffix and say the word
aloud. If a player does not have a word that matches the suffix, the player’s
turn is over. If a player lays down an incorrect card, the card must be put
back in his or her hand, and play proceeds to the next player.
5. If a player is holding a change the pattern card, the card can be played to
change the suffix to one of the other suffixes in the game (for example, -er).
Play then continues as above, with players laying down cards that follow
the new suffix spelling pattern.
6. If no player is holding a card with the required suffix, the player who last
played a card chooses a different suffix and lays down a card with that
suffix, saying the word and naming the suffix. Again, play proceeds around
the group.
7. Play continues until one player runs out of cards to win the game.
