Teams Chess Championships
Somerville House, Brisbane
1-2 December 2007
Players, schools, parents, coaches, supporters
It’s great to see a plan come together. Everything meshed - the teams and their enthusiasm, the
superb playing and coaching facilities at Somerville House, the canteen and other support amenities, the organising effort - to give us a memorable weekend cementing the event as the flaghip of
the Australian schools calendar.
For all those who participated or were present, we hope this souvenir bulletin keeps the memory
alive for years to come.
Congratulations to the winners and placegetters - the best of the best. Let’s not forget of course
that all the players were winners - they all won their way through their state qualification processes
to reach the national finals.
Special thanks must go to The Principal and staff of Somerville House, for the use of their performing arts centre and other
facilities
Charles Zworestine, for his customary standard of excellence as chief arbiter
Connie Pizzato and Graeme Gardiner, for their efforts on the organising committee
Patrick Byrom, Matt Gilpin and Tyson Walker, for their back-room support
Dawn Ford and her helpers in the canteen
Gary Wastell and John Surridge, ACF and CAQ Presidents, for their ongoing support
CAQ, for footing the bills
Good luck to all teams on the 2008 circuit. We look forward to renewing acquaintances in Adelaide
next December.

Arbiter’s Report
by Chief Arbiter Charles Zworestine
To paraphrase an old saying (using a bit of poetic licence along
the way), good things come in neat packages… This is certainly
true of the 2007 Australian Schools Teams Championships, where
we celebrated the tenth anniversary of what has already become
a very popular and successful event. It was fitting that on this
celebratory occasion, Graeme Gardiner’s brainchild should return
to his home state of Queensland, where the great man himself
was on a fantastic organising team that included Ian Murray,
Connie Pizzato and Dawn Ford (among others). Their magnificent
efforts provided us with a neat package of four divisions of six
teams each, filling each division with Queensland sides where
required to even out the numbers – no byes, everyone was happy!
Only Tasmania and Northern Territory were not represented –
hopefully that is to come in the future. But another neat package
was the superb venue at Somerville House, an independent girls
school 2 km from the city centre in Brisbane – their fifth floor
auditorium was widely acknowledged to be the event’s best venue
yet. All of this enabled us to concentrate on the chess, which
was expected to produce its usual excitement; and it certainly
did so, perhaps in some cases more than others…
GIRLS PRIMARY:
This was perhaps the most exciting of all
the events, featuring as it did a close race undecided until the
last round… The top two teams established themselves early,
with Curtin (ACT) beating Fernvale (QLD) 4-0 in the first round,
a result matched by top Queensland school Somerville House
against Queensland rivals Somerset College. Summer Hill (NSW)
thought they were also in contention after their 3-1 defeat of PLC
(VIC). However, Round 2 made life much harder for Summer
Hill, as they went down 3-1 to Curtin – their only win was when
Rebecca Huang beat namesake Gala Huang after the latter
walked into a skewer that cost her the exchange, then walked
into mate! This point looked vital after Somerville took the outright
lead with another 4-0 win (this time over PLC), while Somerset
recovered from their early setback to beat Fernvale 3½-½…
Closing out the first day, we knew things would be as tight as the
2-2 draw between Somerset and Summer Hill (too much
summer!) – Curtin also beating PLC 4-0 to join Somerville in the
lead. This is because Somerville had earlier conceded a point in
their 3-1 win over Fernvale, Hannah Triscott suffering an accident
against Miriama Gossow; so joint leaders on 11/12 going into
Day 2…
Nothing changed in Round 4, as Curtin and Somerville drew their
crucial match 2-2; what was noticeable about this match was
that Black won every game… So the two horse race continued,
while Fernvale’s 2½-1½ upset win seemed to damage Summer
Hill’s chances of coming third – especially as PLC were able to
beat Somerset 3-1… But it was always going to come down to
the last round, as PLC were only able to beat Fernvale 3-1 –
never enough to get third. But how would Curtin and Somerville
fare? Would we have to go to tiebreaks (which would have
favoured Somerville)? NO! cried Curtin, who were able to
convincingly beat Somerset 3½-½. This proved to be enough for
a one point victory for the ACT school, as Somerville were only
able to win 2½-1½ against Summer Hill; thus Somerville had to
content themselves with second place, with Summer Hill able to
wrap up third.
Standings:1st Curtin (ACT) 16½/20; 2nd Somerville College (QLD)
15½; 3rd Summer Hill (NSW) 9; 4th = PLC (VIC), Somerset College
(QLD) 7; 6th Fernvale (QLD) 5.
OPEN PRIMARY:
This one also looked to be wide open right
from the start – I must confess to having no idea at the beginning
who would win it! The first round offered some clue, as Hawker
(ACT) defeated Lake Joondalup (WA) 4-0; but Hawker were
certainly not completely comfortable, as the other two results
were also convincing! All Saints (QLD) beat Mitcham (SA) 3½½, while Board 1 Joshua Lau was the only one who could score
a point for Summer Hill (NSW) as they went down 3-1 to Mount
View (VIC). It looked to be a two horse race between Mount View
and Hawker even as early as Round 2, as the former beat Lake
Joondalup 4-0 to reach 7/8; but even this was not good enough
for the outright lead after Hawker’s 3½-½ win against All Saints
got them to 7½! Moreover Hawker proved Mount View were not
even a patch on last year’s 20/20 winners from Victoria (Essex
Heights), with Niranjan Gupte’s queen losing to the higher rated
Michael Chan’s two rooks on Board 1 but Hawker winning the
rest to triumph 3-1. This left Hawker in good shape in the outright
lead on 10½/12 going into Day 2, with Mount View still second
on 8. Summer Hill’s 2½-1½ win against Mitcham in Round 2
represented some sort of recovery; they were back in third place
on 7/12 after an excellent Round 3 win against All Saints by 3½½. Meanwhile Lake Joondalup were more than happy to get off
their duck in their 3-1 Round 3 loss to Mitcham; Adam Chan was
ecstatic to register their first victory over Amita Kaludewa!
Hawker faltered a little on the second day, their 2½-1½ win against
Summer Hill enabling Mount View to slightly narrow the gap by
beating Mitcham 3-1. (Lake Joondalup lost 3½-½ to All Saints).
Still, a two point lead was comfortable enough; even after their
shock 2½-1½ loss to Mitcham, it still would have needed a 4-0
win by Mount View for the Victorians to overtake the Canberrans.
Instead, Mount View suffered their own stunning reversal, going
down 3½-½ to All Saints – and suddenly Summer Hill spotted
their chance! A 3-1 win against Lake Joondalup saw the NSW
side join Mount View and All Saints on 11½/20, three points behind
the winners Hawker – but who would take out second place? A
convoluted tiebreak meant you had to look at the individual
matches between the three sides (Summer Hill, All Saints and
Mount View), from which Summer Hill scored 4½ points, All Saints
4 and Mount View only 3½. So, second to Summer Hill, third to
All Saints and fourth to an unlucky Mount View; but an excellent
recovery by both the NSW and Queensland sides…
Standings:1st Hawker (ACT) 14½/20; 2nd = Summer Hill (NSW),
All Saints (QLD), Mount View (VIC) 11½; 5th Mitcham (SA) 8½;
6th Lake Joondalup (WA) 2½.
GIRLS SECONDARY:
A look at the top boards may have
led one to believe that defending champions North Sydney Girls
(NSW) would be facing a tough test, even with their top board
Deborah Ng – she was likely to be challenged by the Board 1’s
from PLC (VIC), Sally Yu; Somerset College (QLD), Jessica
Kinder; and Daramalan (ACT), Luthien Russell. But North Sydney
clearly meant business right from the start! Their 4-0 Round 1
win over Loreto College (QLD) saw them early leaders, though
only narrowly from Somerset (who beat Somerville House (QLD)
3½-½). An early shock was perhaps the first round 2½-1½ win
by Daramalan over PLC, aided and abetted by a win on forfeit by
Luthien Russell over Sally Yu after the latter failed to make it
back in time from the World Youth Championships in Turkey!
Sally showed no ill effects from jet lag as she calmly won pawns
to beat her fellow World Youth participant, Jessica Kinder, as
part of PLC’s second round 3-1 win over Somerset. But North
Sydney were already away to 7/8 and a 2½ point lead after beating
Daramalan 3-1, despite Deborah Ng’s shock loss to Luthien
Russell; in one move, poor Deborah turned a won king and pawn
ending into a lost one… Somerville rounded off Round 2 with a
3½-½ win over Loreto. Round 3 then saw Deborah hold a draw
with Sally in an even queen and minor piece ending, North Sydney
winning all other boards to win 3½-½ and reach 1½/12. This saw
them lead by 2 points going into the second day from Somerset,
who beat Loreto 4-0; while Daramalan remained in contention
on 6½/12 after defeating Somerville 3-1.
The big match in Round 4 saw Jessica successfully attack
Deborah to win their crucial top board game; at least we thought
it would be crucial, till the tactics all worked out in favour of the
North Sydney girls on the lower boards to enable all of them to
win and triumph 3-1! So their title was safely defended with a
round to spare, as they reached 13½/16 and a 4 point lead from
Somerset and Daramalan (beat Loreto 3-1). Meanwhile
Somerville’s shock 2½-1½ win against PLC seemed to put the
Victorians out of contention for even a minor place; the second
Queensland school were on 7½ in fourth place, a point ahead of
PLC! Fortunately for PLC this situation did not persist, as North
Sydney put paid to Somerville 3-1 in the last round; PLC were
thereby able to easily overtake them by beating Loreto 4-0. PLC
even thought this may be enough for third place after Somerset
took care of Daramalan 3-1, Jessica beating Luthien with a skewer
to take from her the prize of top scorer on top board; PLC were
now level with Daramalan on 1½/20. But sadly for PLC the
Canberra school’s tiebreak was better and they took third, while
Somerset easily claimed outright second on 12½/20.
Standings: 1st North Sydney (NSW) 16½/20; 2nd Somerset
(QLD) 12½; = 3rd Daramalan (ACT), PLC (VIC) 10½; 5th Somerville
House (QLD) 8½; 6th Loreto (QLD) 1½.
OPEN SECONDARY:
Defending champions Balwyn High
(VIC) were always going to be hard to beat here, especially with
their top board Chris Wallis being one of the favourites for the
upcoming Australian Junior Championships in Sydney. However,
we thought they may be pushed by 2005 champions St. Peter’s
(SA), also with a very strong top board in James Obst; and could
Knox Grammar (NSW) improve on their second place from last
year? After their first round 4-0 win against Applecross (WA), we
thought the answer was yes; but Balwyn also stamped their
authority with a 4-0 win against Hawker College (ACT), while St.
Peter’s could only manage a 2½-1½ win against King’s Christian
College (QLD), a school with good depth (four tough players).
Round 2 told us a bit more, as King’s beat Applecross 3½-½ and
then Balwyn put paid to St. Peter’s 2½-1½. It could have been
even better for Balwyn, as James Obst pushed too hard to win a
drawn knight ending against Chris Wallis and ended up in an
inferior position; but James is nothing if not a fighter, and his
fight here ended up turning the game around in time pressure
into a win! Speaking of turning games around, Sherab Guo-Yuthok
was in a dead lost rook ending pawns down when his opponent,
James Cronan, walked into a mating net and lost; with their Board
3 also failing to win an ending 3 pawns up (he allowed a stalemate
trick!), Knox could only draw 2-2 with Hawker in the end…
If that was not bad enough for Knox, Round 3 was worse; in a
stunning upset, despite out-rating their opponents, they went
down 4-0 to King’s! The big shocks were Sam Grigg’s tactical
victory against James Cronan on Board 1, and Daniel Ford
beating Jeffrey Tse on Board 2; this enabled King’s to reach 9/12
and stay close to Balwyn… Meanwhile the latter kept rolling on,
beating Applecross 4-0 to reach 1½/12; while St. Peter’s stayed
in the hunt on 7/12 by beating Hawker 3-1. If there was any doubt
about Balwyn, they put it to rest in Round 4 by grinding down
King’s 4-0; their title defence wrapped up with a round to spare!
But the battle for second was well and truly on, as Knox finally
played a good match to beat St. Peter’s 2½-1½ (three draws and
a win); it could have been even better if James Cronan had
converted his won ending an exchange ahead against James
Obst… (In the other Round 4 match, Hawker beat Applecross 31). Sadly Knox could not maintain form in the last round, as Balwyn
easily disposed of them 3-1. But the battle for second was on in
earnest, as King’s beat Hawker 3-1 to leave St. Peter’s needing
4-0 to against Applecross to overtake them. In this they failed, as
3-1 was all they could do; so King’s took second on 12, half a
point clear of St. Peter’s who had to content themselves with
third for the second year in a row on 11½.
Standings:1st Balwyn High (VIC) 17½/20; 2nd King’s (QLD) 12,
3rd St. Peter’s (SA) 11½; 4th Knox (NSW) 9½; 5th Hawker (ACT)
7; 6th Applecross (WA) 2½.
Many thanks must go to all the organisers for doing a magnificent
job of organising the event, but most especially Dawn Ford for
her fabulous canteen! I believe everyone enjoyed themselves,
regardless of results. This event just seems to get better and
better. I look forward to the next one in Adelaide in 2008…
