Maine`s Jewish Heroes: Fallen Servicemen

Maine’s Jewish Heroes: Fallen Servicemen
List compiled by Jim Friedlander; poster created by Margie Weiner ’12
The Jewish tradition emphasizes the principle of mi-dor le-dor, that a relationship unites Jews “from generation to generation.”
In honoring Maine’s Jewish servicemen who lost their lives serving our nation during the world wars, Jews recognize not only their patriotism
but also the tradition of bravery and self-sacrifice they passed on to us and to future generations.
The Jewish War
Veterans Post #99 in
Portland is named
for Corporal Jacob
Cousins, killed in
France on October
14, 1918.
Private John Harrisburg, standing second
from the left among fellow Marines, was
killed in action on July 19, 1918, in France.
Brothers Charles and Frank
Solomon, determined to oppose the
Nazis, joined the Royal Canadian Air
Force prior to America’s entry into
the war. Following the bombing of
Pearl Harbor, the brothers
transferred to the U.S. Army Air
Corps. Frank was killed when his
plane was shot down over Germany.
Charles was also killed, within a
month of his brother’s death.
