they were wrong
 The Allied Powers soon retreated

AMERICA JOINS THE FIGHT: FINALLY

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
Germany began to attack any ship in enemies water
 Germany sunk the Lusitania on May 7, 1915 and many
Americans were outraged because American citizens were
onboard
 America threatened Germany and Germany discontinued
the use of unrestricted submarine warfare
 Germany, however, returned to the tactic in 1917

AMERICA JOINS THE FIGHT: FINALLY

Zimmerman Telegram
In February 1917, Germany sent a telegram to Mexico
asking Mexico to declare war on the US
 In return Germany promised Mexico that it would
help regain land that Mexico lost to the US
 The US found out about the telegram and were
extremely angry
 This was the last straw for the US and declared war
on Germany in April 1917

WOMEN IN THE WAR
Thousands of women joined the war effort at
home
 Women replaced men in factories, offices, and
shops
 They built tanks, ammunition, plowed fields, and
ran hospitals
 Women returned to the home after WWI was
over, but it did change the way many people
viewed women

WAR AFFECTS THE HOME FRONT

Total War
Countries devoted all their resources to the war
effort
 Governments took complete control of the
economy – telling factories what to produce and
how much, and putting people to work



People can only buy a small amount of items
needed for the war

up morale, and support for the war

 You will need to choose a topic from below to base your
poster on:

Aiding (helping) our allies

Supporting the war effort
Your final project should be on a piece of construction
paper, have color, images, and words to get across the
meaning of the poster
RUSSIA WITHDRAWS
Czar Nicholas is forced to step down from power
due to shortages of food and fuel
 The new govt tried to continue fighting the war
but the Russian army refused to fight
 In November 1917, Vladimir Lenin seized power
 Lenin offered Germany a truce and signed the
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk to end the war between
Germany and Russia

THE CENTRAL POWERS COLLAPSE
Germany was now able to focus all of its
resources on fighting the Allied Powers in France
 They made a quick attack on France and it
seemed as if victory was in sight
 However, the German military was weakening
and the Allies attacked back
 The US troops had finally reached the war and
helped with the finish push of the war

THE CENTRAL POWERS COLLAPSE CONT…
The Central Powers began to collapse as the
American soldiers continued to pour into Europe
and help
 Austria-Hungary fell out of the war in Oct 1918
 Soldiers in Germany mutinied and forced the
government out of power
 The new German govt signed an armistice to stop
the war
 WWI ended of November 11, 1918

