WEEKLY PROGRAM 2017-2018 (28.11.–23.4.)
Our weekly Programs start from our Safari Centre in Ruka (address: Rukarinteentie 1), to which we return at the end of
the program. Programs include free transfers from the following places: Sokos Hotel Kuusamo 50 min, Holiday Club
Kuusamon Tropiikki 40 min, MastonAitio skibus stop 20 min or Ruka center skibus stop 10 min before the start. Transfer
to Safari Centre will be by private coach. After safari return transfer included. Please inform us if you need transfers.
Programs are guided and include a safari outfit (overalls, hand gloves, boots, woollen socks, masks and helmets).
Register for Weekly Programs at the latest on the previous day before 17.00 (by phone, email or Ruka Safaris
online shop). Minimum age for snowmobiling safaris is 5 years. Driving licence is needed for snowmobiling and RZR-car
driving.
MOTORIZED SAFARIES
Snowmobile Introduction 20km (Mon, Tue, Fri, Sat at 10.00, in Christmas & New Years’ time also 14.00)
This snowmobile safari gives you good basic skills for snowmobiling. Before the start our guide gives you a full safety
briefing and introduction for driving. After learning the snowmobile instructions, we drive a 20 km long tour.
The safari goes through the stunning snowy forests. During the safari we will have a break with coffee / tea and a sweet
bun. Duration about 2,5 - 3 hours. Minimum group size 4 adults.

Snowmobile safari to the reindeer farm 50km (Wednesday at 10.00)
This snowmobile safari goes through the beautiful forests and over ice covered lakes to a traditional reindeer farm with a
real atmosphere. At first we will have a short reindeer sled-drive, followed by feeding the reindeer and sharing the stories
of reindeer´s life in the arctic nature. After the reindeer sledding, you will receive a diploma and enjoy coffee with sweet
pastry and sausage. Duration about 4-5 hours. Snowmobiling distance is about 50km. Minimum height 140 cm required
for participation into this program. Minimum group size 4 adults.

RZR buggy rally (Tuesdays & Saturdays at 14.00)
Have fun and challenge your driving skills in the snow and ice trails by RZR -cars (buggies). During the program we will
also have a small contest amongst the group. You will also enjoy a hot drink. Driver needs a valid driving license.
Duration about 2 hours. Minimum group size 4 adults, maximum 12 persons / group.

Border trip, snowmobiling to the Russian border (Saturday at 10.00)
This snowmobile safari takes us towards the eastern part of Kuusamo, close to the Russian border. During the tour we
will drive on the top of the magnificent Kuntivaara hill, which is famous for its snow frozen trees. The breath taking
scenery over the arctic wilderness will be a memory which you will never forget. We will enjoy soup lunch and coffee in a
cosy wilderness restaurant. Length of the challenging tour is about 100 km. Safari is driven with one person per
snowmobile. Duration about 6 hours. Please note that previous driving experience with snowmobiles is highly
recommended for this safari. Snowmobile Introduction safari gives you good skills to participate to this safari. Minimum
group size 4 adults.

NORTHERN LIGHT PROGRAMS
The land of Northern lights, evening snowmobiling in the taiga forest (Friday at 19.00)
This tour will start in the evening when nature starts to show its magical moments. During the tour we will stop for a break
and enjoy coffee, sweet bun and hot sausages by an open fire and if we are fortunate we will see the Northern lights
dancing across the starry night sky. Driving distance is about 30 km and duration about 3 hours. Minimum height 140 cm
required for participation into this program. Minimum group size 4 adults.

Search for the Northern Lights, snowshoe walking in the fell scenery (Tuesday & Thursday at 19.00)
You have to capture the true feeling of a winter night in the beautiful fell scenery. Our walk will follow the old reindeer
treks in the fell surroundings. Every now and then we will stop to admire the nature and snow-covered trees. If the sky is
clear we see the bright stars and with a little luck the colourful Northern Lights. During the trip we will enjoy a break for a
hot drink and our guide will also tell us interesting stories about the Northern Lights and the arctic nature. Length of the
walk is about 4 km. Duration about 3 hours. Minimum group size 4 adults.

Starlight sledging to search for the Northern Lights (Wednesday & Friday at 19.00)
This is an unforgettable adventure for families. You’ll be seated in a sledge pulled by a snowmobile and we start driving
into the forest. Our route goes through varied landscapes. During the journey by sled we arrive to a camp. There you
make a fire together with our guide and make coffee and tea and grill sausages. If we are lucky we can see the Northern
Lights dancing in the sky while we travel. Duration about 3 hours. Minimum group size 4 adults.

HUSKY AND REINDEER PROGRAMS
Visit to the reindeer farm (Wednesday at 12.00)
On this tour we will have a transfer to the traditional reindeer farm with a real atmosphere. At first we will have a short
reindeer sled-drive, followed by feeding the reindeer and sharing the stories of the reindeer´s life in the arctic nature.
After the reindeer sledding, you will receive a diploma and enjoy coffee with sweet pastry and sausage. Duration of the

Husky safaris
When we arrive to the husky farm we will meet the friendly husky dogs. After learning how to drive the husky-sled, you
will have a memorable journey of 5, 10 or 20 km (2 persons/sledge). The program includes coffee break with sweet bun
and hot sausages after the husky ride. Duration including transfers from Ruka is 2 - 4 hours depending of the route

WELLBEING IN THE NATURE SURROUNDINGS
Ice Fishing (Wednesday, Saturday at 10.00)
Ice fishing, or as we say pilkki, is indeed a Finnish hobby that almost all local people do. We travel by car to the shore of
a beautiful lake with plenty of fish. We set off by snowshoes and walk a short distance to the frozen lake where we start
ice fishing. After drilling a hole in to the lake and setting up your fishing jigs “pilkki” you may catch perch, whitefish, roach,
pike or even grayling. If you are lucky enough to catch fish our guide will show you how to prepare the fish by an open
fire. During the tour coffee/ tea and sweet bun are also served. Duration about 3 hours. Minimum group size 4 adults.

Snowshoehike to Oulanka National Park (Tuesday at 10.00)
This snowshoe hike takes you to the most beautiful part of Kuusamo. See the Oulanka National Park in its winter beauty.
We will hike next to the river Kitka with snowshoes and see the Myllykoski old mill. This winter scenery will surely take
your breath away. Hiking distance is about 4 km and during the program we will have a coffee break with sandwiches.

IISAKKI VILLAGE PROGRAMS
The Iisakki Village offers exotic and unforgettable experiences. The Iisakki Village is located in the peaceful country side
area, only 10 min drive from Ruka Centre.
Igloo night in arctic snow igloo (Monday – Sunday at 19.00)
Program starts with transfer from Kuusamo or Ruka to Iisakki Village where snow igloos are located.
Before the arctic night you enjoy delicious three course dinner in our restaurant.
The highlight of the evening is an exotic night in our snow igloos. Sleeping bags and appropriate clothing will make sure
that you will stay warm even in the harshest winter conditions.
After the arctic night, you will be served a plentiful breakfast in a house close to the igloos with possibility for a morning
shower. Please note that there are a limited number of snow igloos, please book your winter night well in advance. The
season for this winter night program is 18.12. – 30.3.

Lappish Wild Food dinner (Wednesday & Friday at 19.00)
A traditional Lappish 3-course dinner in the cosy Iisakki Village´s old main house, Iisakin Talo. The menu is full of local
wild food delicacies with fish, wild game and berries and lots of different exotic flavors! The evening begins with a short
movie about the magical Northern Lights in a rustic outdoor barn theatre. Afterwards we move to the Iisakin Talo to enjoy
the dinner. During the evening there is also a possibility to admire the village´s other homely buildings and snow igloos.
Duration about 3 hours with transfers.
In the village there are also snow igloos for an arctic overnight adventure. If you want to spice up your experience to
arctic level you can book an igloo overnight in Iisakki Village.

SaunaTour – Finnish sauna experience & Wild food dinner (Wednesday & Friday at 16.30)
Experience the traditional sauna at Iisakki’s lakeside sauna. The Iisakki's sauna is one of the first saunas awarded with
the Authentic Finnish Sauna Experience -certificate. The certificate allows sauna enthusiasts to identify the best and
highest quality Finnish sauna experiences. This experience is guided with a local sauna guide who will tell you about the
original sauna culture and why it is so important to Finns! The sauna guide also joins in to the sauna and shows what to
do there. No one is naked during this experience, you can wear you bathing suit or towel in the sauna.
Spice up your sauna experience also with warm outdoor jacuzzi or dip in the ice hole! Sauna is suitable for everyone
from small children to grandparents. During the sauna experience berry juice, water and tea is served as well as small
snacks. After the sauna experience it is time to enjoy traditional Lappish wild food dinner in Iisakki Village´s old main
house Iisakin Talo. Menu is full of local wild food delicacies with fish, wild game and berries and lots of different flavors!

responsible for his/her own snowmobile and damages until the 1000 Euro / one vehicle are at the clients charge. You can buy selfliability waiver which reduces your self-liability to 150 € / damage. Self-liability waiver is 25 € / driver / safari. Self-liability waiver needs to
be paid before the safari.
The charge of self-liability (150 – 1000 €) in case of damages needs to be paid on the spot at Ruka Safaris office after the safari. Driving
licence for snowmobile safaris will be needed. Ruka Safaris doesn’t recommend snowmobiling to pregnant women. Children under
140cm travel in a sledge during snowmobile safaris. Bookings needs to be made no later than one day before the program starts.
Cancellations 8 or more days before programs starts are refundable. Cancellations 7 days or less before program starts we refund
money only with medical certificate. Ruka Safaris winter activities are planned and operated subject to prevailing weather conditions,
which are beyond our control. Duration of the program may vary up to the weather and group size. We keep a right to change programs
and timetables for clients safety.
