Faithfulness: Remembering Who and Whose We Are
Our G.I.F.T. initiative begins this weekend! As it comes closer we trust that the Holy Spirit will be our leader
and guide. Our focus for this first week will be “Faith and Identity.” So what does that mean? For me, in short it
means remembering who we are and whose we are. After all, we are baptized followers of Jesus Christ and we
each belong to God. Our Gospel reminds us that there is a battle that we continually experience on our faith
journey. It is the battle between selfishness and faith, the battle between “God and mammon.” Our faith battles
with “the world” for our focus, our center. It is easy for us to lose our way and place other things before God.
That is, until we face an event or have an experience which forces us “to act more prudently” as we turn to God
to seek forgiveness.
St. Teresa of Kolkata, who was recently canonized, said "W e are called upon not to be successful, but to be
faithful.” Being faithful to God is everything. Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., is the author of the bestselling book,
My Grandfather’s Blessings. In the introduction of the book she tells the following story:
Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things
that other people brought, dolls and books and stuffed animals. My dolls and stuffed animals have been gone for
more than half a century, but many of my grandfather’s gifts are with me still. Once he brought me a little paper
cup. I looked inside it expecting something special. It was full of dirt. I was not allowed to play with dirt.
Disappointed, I told him this. He smiled at me fondly. Turning, he picked up the little teapot from my dolls’ tea
set and took me to the kitchen where he filled it with water. Back in the nursery, he put the little cup on the
windowsill and handed me the teapot. “If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may
happen,” he told me. At the time, I was four years old and my nursery was on the sixth floor of an apartment
building in Manhattan. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him dubiously. He nodded with
encouragement. “Every day, Neshume-le (beloved little soul),” he told me. And so I promised. At first, curious to
see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder
and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet.
Shaking his head no, he said, “Every day, Neshume-le.” The second week was even harder, and I became
resentful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him
but he refused to take it, saying simply, “Every day, Neshume-le.” By the third week, I began to forget to put
water in the cup. Often I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and
water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day. And one morning, there were two little green leaves that had
not been there the night before. I was completely astonished. Day by day they got bigger. I could not wait to tell
my grandfather, certain that he would be as surprised as I was. But of course he was not. Carefully he explained
to me that life is everywhere, hidden in the most ordinary and unlikely places. I was delighted. “And all it needs
is water, Grandpa?” I asked him. Gently he touched me on the top of my head. “No, Neshume-le,” he said. “All
it needs is your faithfulness.” (All that God needs is our faithfulness!)
Don’t forget, “The Lord is with you!

Question of the Week:
Who is someone you consider
to be a person of faith?
What is it about them
that makes them a person of faith?
Our G.I.F.T. initiative begins this weekend.
We’ve had more than 600 people register to be
part of our Sunday evening program! We kick off
this year by spending the first month focusing on
the theme of faith.
During the month we’ll be examining faith
from many different points of view, including Baptism as the first step on our journey of faith; faith
as a virtue; faith and the Creed; and faith that produces discipleship and action.
Prayer of Unknowing
Thomas Merton
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going. I do not see
the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know
myself, and the fact that I think I am following
Your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please You
does in fact please You. And I hope I have that
desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will
never do anything apart from that desire. And
I know that, if I do this, You will lead me by
the right road, though I may know nothing
about it.
Therefore I will trust You always though I may
seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I
will not fear, for You are ever with me, and
You will never leave me to face my perils
alone.
Amen
What is Faith?
Throughout history God has called upon people to
follow his will. Faith is the way people respond to
God’s call. On a simple level, faith means a belief
in God. For Christians it means more than that.
Faith is believing and accepting that God has
made himself known to us through his words and
actions, especially through Jesus Christ. It is accepting God’s truth with our minds. Faith is
something that guides our entire lives.
In a way it would be simple to say, “I believe that
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who is our savior.”
It would be easy if that was all that was required
for salvation. But having faith also requires us to
live our lives based on this belief.
Faith is a gift from God. Someone cannot have
faith without the Holy Spirit, who helps us see our
need for God. Before a person can have this gift of
faith, he or she must first have the freedom to
choose it. Being faithful is achieved by someone
who understands and freely chooses to believe in
God.
Having faith means you believe, or accept something to be true. Christians believe in the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Finally, having faith means doing something
about it. Doing means you act upon what you believe. In fact, without the doing, someone could
argue that you don’t have faith at all. As they say:
“The proof is in the pudding.” We can see the true
significance of ideas or beliefs when they are put
into action. This applies to faith too. Your actions
make real your belief and trust in God.

SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE MEETS
The Social Ministry Committee will be meeting for the
first time this academic year on Wednesday, September 21,
at 6:00 p.m. in St. Bridget’s Parish Hall. We will start with
a shared meal, followed by updates/discussions of fall activities (such as the upcoming Ministry Fairs, October
“Angels of Mercy” outreach, election support and Christmas outreach). We will be welcoming Angie Salerno from
Migrant Ministry (as of September 1, Migrant Ministry became a sub-committee of Social Ministry) and will be hearing from Bill DiBacco on progress with the Family Promise
initiative.
This committee works to address the needs of the local,
area and global community. New members are always most
welcome to join. As well as the items mentioned above,
this group oversees our Kalama Project in Kenya, Operation Rice Bowl during Lent, Formula for Life campaign
each January, our participation in the Red Kettle campaign
and KIDSHOP each December, and addresses legislative
matters on Public Policy Sunday. If you would like more
information, contact Deacon Claude. If you have points of
concern you would like the Committee to consider, please
let us know.
GET A HEAD START ON YOUR JESSE TREE ORNAMENTS
A Jesse Tree is a very old Christmas tradition. It’s
named from Isaiah 11:1 “A shoot shall come out of the
stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.”
We adorn a Jesse Tree with ornaments that represent people, prophesies and events from the Old Testament leading
up to the birth of Jesus.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 8, at 2:00
p.m. in Dougherty Hall. We will give you the instructions;
you will pick the ornament to make. On Sunday, November
13, at 3:30 we exchange ornaments. You will then have a
full set of ornaments!

LITTLE FLOWERS
Little Flowers is a Catholic club for girls ages 5 and up
that teaches virtues through scripture, saints’ biographies,
the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the spirituality of
St. Therese, the Little Flower of Liseaux. The program consists of four wreaths of nine virtues each. Like a scouting
program, girls earn badges for the virtues they have practiced, and life skills they have learned. We have field trips,
a service project and each year, a Mother’s Day Tea! Our
group is growing by leaps and bounds. The new year starts
on September 25. Call Karen Neubecker at 396-0989 for
info.

THE HUMAN FACE OF MIGRATION:
LEARNING MERCY AT THE BORDER
The William H. Shannon Chair in Catholic Studies at
Nazareth College Presents: Sr. Norma S. Pimental, M.J, on
September 22, 7 p.m. in the Otto A. Shults Community
Center located on the campus of Nazareth College.
On September 23, at 1:30 p.m., in the Linehan Chapel, Golisano Academic Center, Sr. Norma will also present: Nurturing a Culture of Caring.
For more than a decade, Norma S. Pimental, a sister of
the Missionaries of Jesus, has served as executive director
of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, overseeing
a host of ministries and social services and leading efforts to
provide relief in times of disaster and crisis. She has been
instrumental in quickly organizing community resources to
respond to the surge of Central Americans seeking asylum
in the United States and setting up the Humanitarian Respite
Center in McAllen, Texas. Drawing attention, nationally
and globally, to the plight of the countless and distressed
refugee individuals and families, Pimental has revealed the
human face of migration. She has testified before the U.S.
Commission on Civil Rights on the “State of Civil Rights in
Immigration Detention Facilities” and addressed the members of the United Nations.
Pimental’s ministry of advocacy and service has been
recognized in many ways: the Martin Luther King Jr. "Keep
the Dream Alive" Award from Catholic Charities USA;
awards from the University of Texas - Pan American and
Texas Medical Association; nomination as Texan of the
Year; and recipient of the 2015 Rio Grande Valley’s Citizen
of the Year. In September 2015, Pope Francis saluted Sister
Norma via satellite and thanked her for her work. “I love
you,” he said.

A BIT FROM THE BLOG OF OUR YOUTH MINISTER
“Happy New Week! Or should I say Holy New Week!
That sounded corny didn’t it? Have you ever heard a phrase
more obviously out of a Youth Minister’s mouth than
“Holy New Week”? Probably not. But I wouldn’t say it
unless there was a good reason for it. Happiness is something passing and additional. Holiness is long-term personal growth.
“One of the most interesting things you’ll learn if you
ever research the history of Christianity is that for the first
several centuries after Jesus’ life every story about him and
his ministry, every parable, every teaching, every miracle
was passed down orally. Until the third century when
things started to get written and re-written, everything was
passed down around the fire or over a meal or between
loved ones sharing some bonding time. Talking, telling a
story from one to another is in our roots as Christians.
More than simple story-telling, the story of our Faith was
something told like nuggets of advice or as caring words
between friends. Faith in Jesus was something inherently
shared by the nature of its getting passed on. . .”
