AUSTRIA - Austria is a federal republic and is a landlocked country of approximately 8.5 million. It
is bordered by the Czech Republic and Germany to the north and Slovakia to the east and Italy to
the south, with Switzerland to the west. It covers 32,386 square miles and has an alpine climate.
The majority of the population speak the Bavarian dialect of the German language. Austria is a parliamentary representative democracy comprising of nine federal states. Vienna is the capital and is
largest city in the country. Austria joined the International Association of Lions Clubs in 1952 with the
Graz Lions Club as its oldest.
