Activity: Word Time – The children met Squawker.
Squawker introduced the words meet and shake. Each
child had the chance to shake Squawker’s wing after
meeting him.

Math Counts
Activity: One is Different – We used 3 blue squares
and 1 purple square to describe how objects are the
same and different. We repeated the process by using
3 pennies and 1 nickel. Finally I challenged the children
to find 3 objects that were the same and one different
using math manipulatives.

Activity: Name/Voting Cards – First the children wrote
their name on an index card. Then they were able to
decorate it as they wished. We will use the cards the
rest of the year to indicate our choices when we vote or
to help create graphs.

Activity: LFO: Try Your Best – First we watched a
short video on the computer, about how animals follow
rules. Then we moved to the block area to read the
Let’s Find Out issue. The children echo-read “I will try
my best…” Afterwards the children searched for letters
and specific pictures.

• Use visual and print clues to “read” a story
• Identify alphabet letters

• Exploring meaningful print materials such as our
magazine

Activity: Math Journal – The children recalled
yesterday’s math activity. In their journals they drew
two objects the same and one different.

• Draw pictures with more detail

Activity: Move that Ball – Some children listened to
directions to move a specific color ball to a specific color
cone. They children decided how they were going to
move the ball. Some kicked, threw or carried the ball.

• Playing the game “Move that Ball”

Activity: In or Out Toss and Shout – The children
tossed bean bags into the air. Then they stated whether
it was in or out of the blocks.

• Use spatial concept vocabulary correctly in daily
speech such as in/out

Activity: Inside Textures – Several different baskets
and vinyl siding were placed on the table. The children
placed their paper on top of one of the objects a
rubbed the crayon’s long side revealing the different
textures.

• Critique and make observations about artwork
• Purposefully choose art tools and materials to
achieve desired outcomes
We learn it by:
• Doing crayon rubbings on everyday objects

Activity: Fishing for Letters – Picture tiles, color tiles,
magnetic letters and numbers as well as number and
letter cards were inside a basket. The children picked
an item and stated what they found. If it was a letter
they kept it; if it was something else they put it back.

• Distinguishing between letters, pictures, and other
symbols
• Identify alphabet letters

Activity: Look for Letters – The children listened to the
rabbit name a letter. Then they tried to select the
corresponding letter. Once all the letters were selected
it revealed a silly animal picture.

Activity: Count the Dots – The children selected a
domino and counted the dots on one side. Then they
tried to match the dots on a second domino.

Activity: Guess the Sound – The children took turns
making sounds around the classroom. The other children
closed their eyes and guessed the sounds they heard.

Activity: Wooden Spoon and Egg Relays – The
children placed a wooden egg on their spoon. They
balanced the egg as they walked to a nearby tree.
When the egg fell they were supposed to go back and
start again.

• Participating in the relay race

Activity: Wiggle Works School – The children looked
at the cover and made predications about what the
story might be about. They looked at the illustrations to
find clues and meanings.

• Following along in the book read to the group

Activity: Coin Sort – The children noticed the
differences in colors, size, and pictures on coins. Then
they matched and grouped coins that were the same.
