Revit Family / Group Naming Convention: The family naming convention is based on a 4 field category system, delineating all of the information the users need to know about the families. Fields are separated by hyphens without spaces(‐). No commas, periods, or slashes can be used in Revit file names. Family names can NOT contain: Users initials, Office initials, dates, Project phases, location in project (unless specific CONST pieces dictate*). *Note: Some families whose Names are called out directly in Schedules (Door Panels, Door Frames, etc) will not be named this way, but will have names specifically delineating their type "P01," "F02," etc. Field 1‐ Select the Category of Family. Where applicable, this should also be selected under Settings > Family Category and parameters. **Please note that Detail Components use field 1 from this Chart, but are named with a different system, as are Profiles. Field 2‐ "Item Description (What is it)‐ THEN the Sub Type” of the Object. If it is a “Window” is it a Single, or a Double (NOTE: For Item descriptions like "Base Cabinet" put the item TYPE (Cabinet) first, THEN the subtype. "Cabinet‐Base"). If a Door, is it a “Single,” and “Double,” an “Overhead" If it is an Annotation Family, what is its "use?" (A symbol, a Sheet item, a Tag, etc.) Field 3‐ Beck‐ Standard Library Representation. GEN‐ A VERY Generic piece (Revit Out of the box, downloaded, etc). Should not be critically dimensioned, etc. Manufacturer and Model Number (If a Specific piece other than Beck Standard Library piece) Also include any other specifying criterion (sizes if Fixed, etc) Field 4‐ Revit Host‐ Is it hosted (WH, CH, RH, FB,) an unhosted (UH) Family, a Line Based Family (LB). This helps End Users figure out the proper family to load and use Field 1 A Col‐ Arch. Comp. Example name: CW‐Cabinet‐Base‐UH The name above lets us know the family is CaseWork, and is a Base Cabinet (note the order). In Revit, it is unhosted (UH). Example name: GRP‐Storefront‐ STR‐1 The name above lets us know this is a GROUP (Model Group), of a SPECIFIC configuration of Storefront System (STR‐1). (Model Groups are not hosted, so field 5 is not needed). Example name: P61.rfa This family doesn't have a name per the above, because it is a "Selectable" item (Nested Door Panel). This generally means the family shouldn't be placed on its own, it *belongs* to something else. Example name: CW‐Lav‐Countertop Array‐WH This is a CaseWork family, of a Lav Array in a Countertop. It is Hosted to a Revit Wall. v3.1
