Print out or complete on notebook paper, Sections A through D graphic organizers. Overview: This is an introduction to the ideas about government from the time period known as The Enlightenment. Two famous Enlightenment thinker/philosophers are John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Both of these men produced a number of writings that influenced the colonial government leaders that we are going to study. The article explains both of their viewpoints on why people need governments. Procedures: Read the two page article. Compare/contrast the ideas of these two Enlightenment philosophers by completing the graphic organizers and answering the questions following the article. Time to complete: 45-60 minutes Lesson Overview/Procedures/Length of Time to Complete: Assignment: #1. Read the two page article called "Why Government?". This article explains the viewpoints on why we have government, according to two famous Enlightenment thinkers, Thomas Hobbes (1588) and John Locke (1632). #2. Complete the graphic organizers in Sections A through D on the worksheets, OR on notebook paper. In doing so, you will be comparing and contrasting the views of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke as they answered the question: "Why government?". These assignments can be an extension of a current lesson, a lesson that targets a specific skill, a long-term focus for a particular class, and/or preparation for state testing. While the majority of the work assigned during the E-Day will be completed outside of class, teaches will incorporate some time during the two week window to support student needs with completion of the assignments. Please make sure the length of the assignment is appropriate for the developmental age of the student.
