Did you know that the watermelon is more than 90 percent water and
that there are over 1,200 types of watermelon grown around the world? Watermelons have seeds. They can even have over 100 seeds in one
watermelon. The shiny green outer layer and thick white layer inside the
watermelon is called the rind. It is a protective layer to keep insects and disease
out. The inside of the watermelon is the flesh. The flesh is the sweet, juicy part of
the watermelon. It can be red, yellow, orange, or white in color. Most people only
eat the inside of watermelon, but it is safe to eat all of its parts.
You need three things to grow watermelon: sun, bees and water. Watermelon
grows on a vine. Farmers grow watermelon in rows and raised beds. Flowers of the
watermelon plant are yellow. Pollen is made in the middle of the flower. Bees land
on the flowers and move pollen from one flower to another. This must happen
before a watermelon can begin to grow. A watermelon takes about 90 days to
grow, from planting to harvesting.
Watermelons are fragile, and cannot be harvested by machine. The rind of a
watermelon is not as tough as it looks, so it is picked by hand when it is harvested.
When they pick watermelon, the harvesters are looking for the melon to have a
cream or yellow colored bottom, representing ripeness. Once picked the
watermelon is ready to be eaten and its seeds can be saved to grow new
watermelons.
Watermelon is a fruit and a vegetable. It is a fruit because it grows
from a seed, it has a sweet flavor and refreshing qualities. It is a
vegetable because it is harvested and cleared from the field like
other vegetables and because it is a member of the same family as
the cucumbers, pumpkin and squash.
