Here are two of these activties performed by the students: Digits and Beads At this station you will make a bracelet or a necklace using colored beads to represent the digits of Pi. Assign each digit a color and choose a “special decimal bead” to represent the decimal point: 0 - _______________________ 1 - _______________________ 2 - _____________________ 3 - _______________________ 4 - _______________________ 5 - _____________________ 6 - _______________________ 7 - _______________________ 8 - _____________________ 9 - _______________________ the decimal point - _______________________ Use yarn to make a necklace or a pipe cleaner to make a bracelet. Place one bead on the necklace/bracelet for each digit of pi. You are done when the bracelet is long enough to reach around your wrist or the necklace is long enough to hang around your neck. My Birthdate in Pi??? Using the website: http://www.mypiday.com/ , find how far (how many digits) into the numbers of Pi to find the consecutive numbers of your birthday. For example, if Mrs. Hansen was born on December 31, 1808, she would type 12311808 in the bar then hit enter. After thinking, the website states that those 8 digits can be found after 1,980,586 digits of Pi. Person 1 birthdate: ____________________ # of digits to that date in pi: ___________________ Person 2 birthdate: ____________________ # of digits to that date in pi: ___________________ Irmo High School International School for the Arts, “We Build Bright Futures” 6671 St Andrews Rd. 476-3000 Page 4 Dear Parents, Students, Alumni, and Friends of Irmo High School: The Irmo High School Education Foundation invites you to take a special role in celebrating and supporting Irmo High School’s tradition of excellence during the Remembering the Past and Building a Strong Foundation for the Future fundraising campaign. During this campaign, your qualifying donation to the Irmo High School Education Foundation will be acknowledged with a personalized engraved brick that will be installed on the grounds of the high school near the front entrance. You might use the brick to honor a graduate, a current student or a favorite teacher or staff member. Alumni, please consider purchasing a brick and personalizing it with your name and year of graduation from Irmo High School. Parents of graduating seniors, you may wish to commemorate this momentous event with a lasting gift such as a brick engraved with your child’s name and graduation date. Business owners should consider purchasing a brick engraved with your company name and logo. Through your purchase of a specialized brick, you will be making a positive impact on current and future Irmo High School students. Through the Foundation, you will be putting much-needed resources and tools directly into the hands of those who teach. As state funding declines and competition among schools increases, private support can mean the difference between a good public high school and a great one. Thank you for your support and together we can maintain Irmo High School’s tradition of excellence. Help us Remember the Past and Build a Strong Foundation for the Future together. https://polarengraving.com/IrmoHighSchoolBricks Irmo High School International School for the Arts, “We Build Bright Futures” 6671 St Andrews Rd. 476-3000 Page 5 Bring Your Parent To School Day March 10, 2017 “Bring Your Parent To School Day” was held for the final time this year on last Friday. Approximately 33 parents attended the event. We host it twice per year. The event gives parents an opportunity to see our teachers at work, witness the learning process, and have lunch with their student. Be on the lookout for next year’s advertisement of the event! It’s a great skill because it forces them to open their mind and think about big ideas from another perspective. There are three basic steps for acknowledging and arguing against a counterclaim: 1) Clearly state the claim you’re arguing against. a) ex. Mom, I know you think I shouldn’t have my own cell phone. 2) Make your counterclaim. a) ex. I think, however, that having a cell phone of my own would make me safer. 3) Support your counterclaim with evidence. a) ex. If I’m at a party and people start drinking, I can call you to come pick me up. Or if there’s an emergency, it’ll be easy for me to call you or for you to call me. Activity Next time you and your student are in a heated debate, try switching sides. Have your student argue your side, and you take theirs. It’ll help both of you think through things from the other point of view and provide your student with a chance to practice the critical thinking skills they’re developing when working on acknowledging counterclaims. And don’t worry, even if they’re really good at it, you always have the one irrefutable counterclaim in your pocket--”Because I said so.” District Five Extended Studies Diploma To be eligible to receive a School District Five Extended Studies Diploma, a student must earn 28 units of credit and perform 10 hours of community service work each year. Students are responsible for annually verifying community service. Verification forms are available in the Counseling Office and should be submitted annually to the appropriate counselor by May 1st during the 9th, 10th, 11th grade years, and by February 1st during the senior year. Competitive colleges look for students who have gone above and beyond the minimum requirements. While an Extended Studies Diploma is a local award and does not guarantee college admission, the higher level courses and the extent of commitment required will certainly enhance a student’s profile when applying to college.
