Every day I marvel at the talents of
our students and the pride they take
in learning new skills and exploring
their world. This week I’d like to share
my appreciation of our Art Program. I
love walking the corridors and
enjoying the art work produced by our
Year P-6 students and am amazed at
the powerful pieces they are learning
to create!
The children in
Years 1-2 are
exploring
different new
mediums (e.g.
fluoro oil pastel, chalk pastel), and
techniques (such as smudging) while
learning to use simple starting points
to assist them in
their drawing –
in this case a
circle stencil to
create the bug’s
eyes.
While Mrs Carter
loves to highlight
the work of the
students I would
also like to
highlight the
creativity and knowledge she shares
with the children each
week.
We are very lucky to
have this wonderful
visual arts program at
Mossgiel Park. Thank
you Mrs Carter.
Student Achievement Reports
Your children have been working very
hard this semester and have
celebrated many new achievements.
At this stage of the year,
comprehensive, individual written
reports are being prepared for each
student. These written reports will be
sent home in the first week of Term 3
and will add to the picture of your
child’s progress gained through the
March reports and interviews.
We hope that the Semester One
reports will provide further
opportunities for teachers, students
and families to reflect on student
successes and work together to
implement the suggested strategies
for the second half of the year.
Although we do not plan to hold
formal interviews, I encourage you to
make an appointment to meet with
the teacher of your child should you
have any questions or concerns.
While the Semester One reports are
the formal commitment to Parent
Reporting you are encouraged to
contact the school regarding your
child’s progress at any time that you
see a need or have a concern.
Learning is a partnership between
home and school and we are
committed to creating processes that
support both you and your children.
Early Finish – Next week
Remember that we
finish school at
2:30pm next Friday,
June the 24th. The
early finish will allow
teachers to finalise
their records and administrative work
so that they can turn their focus to
planning an exciting program for the
new term. Please make arrangements
to collect your children from school at
this earlier finishing time.
Advance Notice – Term 3 Pupil Free
Day
On Tuesday, August the 9th, our school
will be closed as teachers work
together to prepare our School Self
Evaluation report – the initial part of
our School Review process. Please
remember to make alternative
arrangements for your child for
Tuesday. Thank you.
Special Lunch Days:
Do you know how lucky we are to
have a school canteen open five days
a week to meet the
needs of our
children (and a few
hungry teachers)?
The recent
Government drive to
limit certain foods in school canteens
contributed to healthier eating habits
but also had a marked effect on
profitability. Our school canteen
narrowly avoided closing but now,
through the hard work of Mrs Hogan
and Mrs Leeman and the generous
mums who volunteer to help in the
canteen, we are making a small
margin of profit that enables our
canteen to continue to serve our
school community.
Special Lunch Days are one way we
seek to raise the funding needed to
maintain a daily schedule of preparing
and serving snacks and lunches. I
would like to thank all the families
that order our two special lunches
each term – the food is always
delicious and the children enjoy
sharing a similar meal. Mrs Fisher and
I love our baked potatoes but I know
many children prefer to choose from
the range of delicious pizzas! I hope
everyone has their order in for our
special lunch day next Thursday. Yum!

Eating Times
our hands because there has been
At Mossgiel Park we
have three
opportunities for
students to refuel; just
prior to morning recess at 11:00am,
fruit break usually around 12:30pm
and lunch which is eaten from 1:30 –
1:40pm each day. Children are able to
have their drink bottles on the work
table as we encourage them to drink
water as required.
We understand that it is sometimes
difficult to have a snack or lunch ready
when your child leaves for school and
so we are happy to call your child to
the Office to collect their snack at
eating times or to pop it in the class
Lunch-Order box to be delivered with
the lunch orders. We call the children
at eating times so that interruptions
to the teaching and learning program
are kept to a minimum. If you do drop
food, drinks, or any other items at the
office for your child to collect could
you please ensure that they are clearly
labelled with the child’s name, and
class – this will help us to ensure that
your child receives the correct items.
We appreciate your help with this.
Thank you for supporting
your school,
Jenny Scott
GARDENING NEWS
Last week, we had an awesome
lunchtime! The Environmental Club
planted seedlings in the school
garden beds. We planted broccoli,
and cauliflower. It was great to
see children from different year
levels working together. We dug
small holes in the soil, put the
seedling in the hole, next we
pushed the soil back around the
seedling, lastly we gave all the
seedlings a good drink. In one
week, the seedlings are as big as
lots of rain and sunshine! These
seedlings were kindly donated by
The Squatting Frog Nursery in
Narre Warren North. We thank
them for this generous donation.

PARENTING ISSUES
Some ways of Interacting with
Kids when they Misbehave
The way you interact with children
when they misbehave influences their
self-esteem and your relationship with
them. Methods that rely on
intimidation, fear, criticism and tears
are out, so what’s in?
Ignoring: Ignore minor misbehaviour
by placing your attention elsewhere.
Much of children’s minor attentionseeking behaviour should be ignored
but this is easier said than done. If you
have difficulty ignoring children’s
behaviour focus your attention
elsewhere, move away or even put on
a walkman. Often, when parents
ignore attention-seeking behaviour it
stops because children don’t gain the
recognition that they are looking for.
The art of Distraction: Redirect
children’s attention rather than
continually reprimand them. Distract a
child’s attention from possible
annoying or rule-breaking by asking
them to help, or join you in a pleasant
activity or game.
Curing parentdeafness: When
you continually
repeat instructions and remind
children to do the right thing you are
encouraging a strange affliction called
parent-deafness. Cure this by stopping
yourself continually nagging children
to do the right thing. For instance
rather than nag children to come to
the dinner-table, tell them that dinner
is ready and allow them to experience
eating a cold meal or they can reheat
it themselves if they don’t come when
you’ve called them.
Catch them being good: Many parents
have little trouble pointing out
children’s misbehaviour but often
forget to recognise them when they
have cooperated and made life easier.
We all like positive recognition - it
makes us feel better and also
encourages us to repeat the behaviour
again. So develop the habit of catching
kids being good rather than when they
are misbehaving.
Provide kids with your approval, not
presents or rewards: Many parents
make the mistake of rewarding
children for good behaviour or giving
them gifts or presents to make up for
not spending time with them. Instead
give them your time rather than gifts
and show your approval with a hug, a
smile or a simple word of
thanks when they have
been cooperative.
Cool-off time: Use cool-off
time when either you or
your child is about to lose control.
Cool-off time is like time-out however
it is not meant to punish or be
unpleasant. It provides your child with
some time to regain control and
reflect on their behaviour. Be firm
around cool-off time and don’t allow a
child to join you until they have
calmed down and gained control.
