We live in a very kind and giving community … many of our friends, families, neighbours, and organizations of all sizes, have already responded generously to the campaign so far. It is an exciting time for OUR Hospital! The Great Expansion will help ensure that STEGH can continue to deliver the patient care our families and friends deserve during each visit, at every stage of life, and as close to home as possible. For more than three years, STEGH has had the lowest ER wait times in Ontario – first out of 74 hospitals – with patient volumes greater than some of our Province’s largest facilities. We sent a balloon into the stratosphere with a payload of Elgin County artifacts to “Launch” the Great Expansion fundraising campaign. It went 30 kms high and landed more than 100 kms away. Construction begins GREAT EXPANSION 101 iThe construction crane is 36 metres tall, requires its own concrete base, and will be disassembled and reused at the end of the Great Expansion on another project. iUnfortunately, our tax dollars don’t cover all of our healthcare needs with the Great Expansion, our community donations are paying for 10% of the construction cost and 100% of the equipment cost. 100% of your gift to the Great Expansion is eligible for a charitable tax receipt! i SURGICAL SUITES EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT The Surgical Suites, which will be located on the second floor of the new addition, will have larger preparation and recovery areas. There will be separate elevators for sterile equipment to go to surgery, separate access for soiled materials to be removed, and elevators dedicated for patients and visitors. This will greatly improve the flow of traffic and reduce infection rates. For individuals, families, and businesses, OUR Hospital is the first line of defence should an accident occur, and OUR Emergency Department is the best in the Province with Ontario’s shortest ER wait times for the past three years - that’s first out of 74 hospitals. iOur Surgical Suites were designed in the 1960s, when the majority of surgeries were performed on an in-patient basis and the technology used was very different from today. With 21st century advances in medical care and technology, the reverse is now true, with about 80 percent of all surgeries at STEGH now performed as day surgeries. Despite the constraints in our current Surgical Suites, STEGH performs an astounding 8,600 surgeries annually. 80% iLast year, our Emergency Department (ER) had more than 50,000 patient visits from community members living in Elgin County, St. Thomas, London, and surrounding counties. In fact, STEGH’s ER is busier than London’s University Hospital, and second only in volume to LHSC’s Victoria Hospital in our area. #1 92% of our Day Surgery patients reside in Elgin County and St. Thomas Ranking of STEGH’s ER performance – top among 74 Ontario hospitals! of patients who visit our ER reside in Elgin County & St. Thomas Our current ER was designed for 20,000 patient visits annually, but sees more than 50,000 visits MEDICAL DEVICE REPROCESSING DEPARTMENT Medical devices are used in every medical procedure. The Medical Device Reprocessing Department’s (MDRD) main function is to decontaminate, inspect, maintain and sterilize medical devices, ensuring they function properly and are safe for reuse. iProviding sterilized medical equipment to all departments at the Hospital is essential to running efficient services. The new MDRD is closely located to key departments such as Surgical and Emergency to provide the materials easily when in demand. There are dedicated elevators for transporting soiled items and clean items separately, which improves workflow and maintains high standards of safety and hygiene practice. Decontamination: point of entry where soiled equipment and instruments are received, disassembled and cleaned; Assembly Area: where medical devices are inspected, reassembled appropriately packaged and labelled; Sterilization: where the sterilization process and monitoring occurs; and Storage & Distribution: where all items are held until they are needed for use. 5,700 surgical carts assembled, dispatched and retrieved annually MENTAL HEALTH iOUR permanent Mental Health Unit will be located on the third floor of the new building. Here, STEGH will adopt the ‘principles of unit design’ where recovery is the deeply personal journey that people with mental health conditions experience in gaining control, meaning, and purpose in their lives. The new space has been designed with key care areas to provide the best environment for recovery. The unit will have 15 in-patient beds and a robust offering of out-patient programs. In addition, in-patients will be able to access an outdoor terrace, in a holistic setting. Our Mental Health Unit is a creative commitment to people and community. Moreover, it continues Elgin County’s storied tradition of supporting mental healthcare. Nearly 400 in-patient visits per year 1 in 5 Canadians will be affected by a wellness illness in his/her lifetime. CT SCANNER A new state-of-the-art CT Scanner will help STEGH to deliver patient care excellence for our families and friends who depend on our award-winning Hospital. OUR new CT Scanner will expand our facility’s clinical capabilities and includes many diagnostic improvements over our current unit in Medical Imaging, Emergency Medicine, Oncology, and Cardiology Imaging. iOUR new CT scanner will include higher quality imaging capabilities – as it acquires 128 to 384 slices per rotation depending on the chosen examination mode. These capabilities greatly improve the imaging quality for diagnosis. The diagnostic quality and technological improvements also aid in the reduction of contrast media and radiation dose for patients. The future of our CT program at STEGH will only continue to improve the patient care excellence available in our community. 40% - 70% Radiation dose reduction Acute stroke imaging Rapid image acquisition – decreasing scan times Dedicated cancer imaging 9,188 Imaging procedures performed (2014/2015 Stats) We need your support more now than ever!
