COMING UP
Our
scheduled winter throwing days
have been well attended and will
hopefully prove to be great preparation
for our members who are competing in
the World Masters Athletics champs in
Lyon. The WMA 2015 events started
in Lyon, France this week and all the
results will be summarised in our next
newsletter. Fingers crossed for our
throwers!!

Championships
The 2015 VMA Winter Throws
Pentathlon Championships will be held
on Sunday 16th August at Duncan
Mackinnon. We are hoping to see lots
of members this year and have
ordered a nice sunny day.
You need to contact Astrid if you want
to compete so that groups can be
arranged in advance - entry costs $5
and don’t forget to wear your VMA
singlet.

After 20 years hosting the AMA winter
throws championships, the ACT
Veterans Athletics Club are ready to
hand over the baton to new hosts but
not before one more being held in
Canberra from the 3rd to 5th October,
2015.

• 56 lb Super Heavy Weight

Member News
We received an email from Jan Morrey
recently with some news that she has
decided to retire from athletics on the
advice of her doctor. Jan has been a
great competitor over many years and
will definitely be missed although she
plans to stay in touch and may be able
to help out as an official sometimes.
We hope to see her at our Christmas
BBQ too. Thanks Jan for sending
through an update to let us know what
you’re up to ☺
Vale Harry Wynhoven
A long time member of the new
Throwers group since 1994 and prior
to that a thrower with Roy Foley, Harry
passed away suddenly on 2nd July,
2015. Harry was 86 and was a Dutch
migrant to Australia with his wife Anne
of 60 years.
Harry was a keen athlete in the
Netherlands and continued his love for
athletics in Australia. While we know
Harry for his throwing, he also
competed in other events including the
pole vault (at Geelong he still holds
the M50+ Pole Vault record). At one
stage Harry competed in the Pole
Vault in the West Indies using a
bamboo pole! During his later life he
apparently had 6 heart by-passes but
was nevertheless a strong and
powerful man. He particularly enjoyed
throwing the 56 & 100lb weights in
recent years.
Harry and Anne have added greatly to
Australia with four children, 14
grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren
and one great great grandchild.
Harry will also be missed in Harvey
Bay and other places around Australia
where he holidayed and spent time
throwing heavy weights around.

Christmas Hampers
The building at Duncan Mackinnon is
definitely starting to look more like the
original artists impression plans shown
above. After a long, drawn-out build,
we are hopeful that we may be able to
use the new facilities for our 2015
Christmas party - time will tell….

We are taking donations again for the
Christmas hampers and are happy to
receive either baskets or suitable
contents. The hamper raffle prizes will
be drawn at our Throwers Group
Christmas BBQ being held this year
on Sunday 6th December after the
Throws Pentathlon competition at
Duncan Mackinnon. Raffle tickets will
be available during October.
