Act 1 Focus: Character Round/Flat
and Dynamic/Static
 Round Character: has many personality traits
 Ex. Benvolio: cautious, diplomatic
 Flat Character: one-dimensional, one trait
 Ex. Sampson: boastful
 Dynamic Character: experience changes throughout the plot
 Ex. Romeo and Juliet
 Static Character: does not experience basic character
changes; stays the same
 Ex. Benvolio, Paris, Friar Lawrence
Act 1 Focus:
Dramatic Foil
 Dramatic foil: highlights the traits of another character through
contrast.
 Example, Benvolio, who tries to quiet a group of brawling servants,
is a foil of Tybalt, who has a fiery hot temper.
 As we read:
 Try and look for the dramatic foils and round/flat, dynamic/static
characters
 Find textual support of dramatic foils and round/flat,
