Let’s review this so you can add this to what you know in French. We had several greetings and farewells. Let’s review them in that section. All images from Microsoft Office PowerPoint. These words “bonjour” and “salut” are the ways we can greet people in French. Bonjour is a greeting we will consider to be formal. It is appropriate to use with people whose name is preceded by a title: Mr., Mrs., Miss, Dr., etc. Salut is a greeting we will consider to be informal or familiar. We will use it with anyone whose first name we use. As you go through the “How are you?” Activity, be sure to take note of the vocabulary you are learning here. We also see some other vocabulary that you will want to learn in this activity. They are here. Begin learning them now. French word Allô Coucou Tout le monde English Word Hello (used when answering the phone) Hey Everyone In French, we have what is known as “formality”. This means that sometimes we use a certain way of saying an expression and sometimes that way is not appropriate because of the person we are talking to. As you go through the “Farewells” Activity, be sure to take note of the vocabulary you are learning here. Let’s see what words we have. We will use the formal tone with anyone whose name is preceded by a title. We will use the familiar tone with people in our own peer group or younger than us. Formal Tone Familiar Tone English word (write this) Comment allez-vous? Comment vas-tu? How are you? Ça va bien? How are things going? Comment ça va? Je vais bien. Bien, merci. Bien, et vous? Ça va. Ça va bien. Pas mal du tout. These are all forms of saying: Things are Bien, et toi? Ça roule! good, it’s going well, I am well, I am fine. What’s new? Quoi de neuf? Ça roule? RIen de nouveau. Rien de neuf. Pas grand chose. Ça roule. Ça va mal. Ça va très mal. Ça va un peu mal. Ça va très bien. Ça va comme ci comme ça. Nothing much. Nothing new. Not a lot. It’s going badly. It’s going very badly. It’s going a little bad It’s going very well. It’s going so-so. These words in this activity are all words to say How are you? Or respond to that question in both the familiar and formal tones. Fill in the table above with the English equivalents so you are sure you know what these expressions mean. Begin to use them now.
