RAN, TEMPORAY AND TRIBUTARY NETWORK
On 25 October 2012, at 23:05:24 (UTC), Southern Italy was struck by an earthquake of magnitude
ML5.0 (Mw=5.2) (Lat 39.881 Lon 16.009 - http://iside.rm.ingv.it/). This earthquake hit the Pollino area
that was interested by a seismic sequence since 2010 (Fig.1).
Twenty-six stations of the Italian strong motion network (RAN), managed by the National Civil
Protection Department (DPC),
were operating within 50 km
from
the
25
October
earthquake epicentre (Fig. 2).
The total number of
recording stations includes 6
temporary
strong
motion
stations deployed by DPC, to
increase the density of
recording instruments in the
area interested by the seismic
sequence.
The 6 temporary digital
Figure 1: seismic activity in Pollino area during 2010-2012
stations (Fig. 2, Tab. 1) were
installed between the 18th and
the 19 th of October and they were equipped with GPRS modem, in order to send data to the data
acquisition center in Rome. The 0ORS temporary station was installed near the ORS permanent station,
for comparing the responses of the two different models of accelerometers.
Thanks to an agreement between DPC and AMRA Consortium also good quality recordings of 31
stations of the Irpinia Seismic Network (ISNet) (http://isnet.amracenter.com/index_en.html) flew into in
the data acquisition system of the RAN at DPC. The waveforms arriving from RAN, DPC temporary
network and ISNet were automatically integrated to the RAN database.

POLLINO 25 OCTOBER EARTHQUAKE: STRONG MOTION DATA
The main event (ML 5.0) of the Pollino seismic sequence (25 October 2012, 23:05 UTC) was recorded
by 73 RAN and ISNET stations located at epicentral distance ranging from about 2 km up to more than
210 km (Fig. 2A).
The closest station was Mormanno (MRM) located at epicentral distance of about 2 km (Fig. 2A). The
MRM station, classified as A site (EC8, Comité Européen de Normalisation 2004), recorded peaks of
acceleration of about 180 cm/s2. The Papasidero station,
that is located at about 8 km from epicenter, recorded an
acceleration peak of 230 cm /s2.
The acceleration peaks was calculated after a
Butterworth band pass filter 0.2-20 hz was applied to the
recorded signals.
The recorded waveforms were extracted from the
archive of the DPC. In particular, an extraction of the
waveform for a time interval not longer than two minutes
and half was made for the stations that recorded
continuously.
Figure 2: RAN and ISNet distribution
With this report the waveforms are made available for all the stations that recorded the 25 October
event. Specifically, there are three files, in SAC format and in ASCII format, for each station referring to
each recording channel. In the header of files the polarity of the signal is indicated. The acceleration
data are given in nm/s2, the standard unit for the acceleration waveforms in SAC format. Data provided
are corrected: mean value of the signal was calculated and removed, as well as any trend.

Figure 2: RAN and temporary network distribution in the area of the Pollino seismic sequence in the time
interval 2010-2012. The red stars represent the epicenter location of the major events, as in ISIDE
database. The focal mechanisms are from Time Domain Moment Tensor [TDMT] at
http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/tdmt.html. The major tectonic elements are modified from Brozzetti et al., 2009,
(Tectonophysics, 476, 210-225).
At the DPC ftp site (ftp://ftp.protezionecivile.it), within the auxiliary material given with this report,
are available:
1. the strong motion dataset in SAC and ASCII format. Please note that the data set is made available
without making any selection on the quality of the signal.
2. the list of stations that recorded the event, along the station code, the coordinates, the toponyms
and the model of instrumentation. A "netcode" parameter identifies which integrated network the
single station belongs to. IT code identifies the national accelerometric network RAN and IR to ISNet
stations.
