Name…………………………………………………………… Class……… 30th January 2015 Menu for week commencing 2nd February 2015 Week 3 Thought for the week ‘It is not our abilities that truly define us – it is the choices we make’ J.K. Rowling (1998) Behaviour Matters – Year 5 & Year 6 Reflection Room As our parents are already aware, Penkridge Middle School expects high standards of behaviour from all our children. It is with some disappointment, therefore, that we need to inform you today about a matter which has increasingly come to our attention this week. A number of Year 5 and Year 6 children have needed to be constantly reminded of some basic school rules which they are repeatedly ignoring, particularly at break and lunchtimes. We have spoken to pupils to outline clearly our expectations, so that they are in no doubt about what they should be doing and where they should be during these time periods. We would very much welcome your support in speaking to children about this at home in order to reinforce those expectations. As a result of these demonstrated behaviours, we shall be running a “Reflection Room” at lunchtimes during the next few weeks for those pupils who continue to ignore school rules and requirements and staff instructions and school expectations. This will involve pupils sitting quietly under staff supervision, using the time to reflect upon their behaviour, and planning for improvement. This will enable all members of the school community, staff and pupils, to have a safe and calm break time. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. Mrs M Wright Star Pupil of the Week. I am sure that families would rather their children drink out of a clean bottle and put on a fresh PE kit rather than having to use kit items which children have left in lockers or lying around the school gathering dust. Thank you for your help in this. YEAR 8 ONLY Parents’ Evening – Year 8 Thursday 12th February 2015 4.00pm – 7.00pm Year 8 Parents’ Evening will be held on the above date. This is your opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their subject teachers. The Evening will be held in the School Hall, and appointments will be made at five minute intervals. Your child will be responsible for organising your appointments with their teachers. Please state your preferred times. Your child will then use this sheet to record your appointments for you. To ensure your child has adequate time to collect appointments, please return the appointment sheet as soon as possible. Please bring the sheet with you on the evening itself; and we encourage your child to attend the appointments with you. The Parents’ Evening is held in advance of the end of year reports being sent out in the Summer Term, so please note that there will not be a formal parents’ evening following these reports being sent home. We will, of course, answer any questions that arise when reports are sent out at that time should you have any queries. We endeavour to make the tests as stress-free as possible, and have found that by practising at this time of year, our children are much less anxious when the time comes to sit the real tests, since they know exactly what will happen and how it all works. In the course of this week, children will have been informed where they will be doing the tests in school and when each test paper takes place. The tests are scheduled as follows: Monday 2 February : Grammar and Punctuation Test Lesson 1 Spelling Test Lesson 2 in class Tuesday 3 February: Mental Maths Test Completed in Maths classroom in Maths lesson Wednesday 4 February: Reading Test During Lessons 1 and 2 Maths Paper A After break, Lesson 3 Thursday 5 February: Maths Paper B Lesson 1 Friday 6 February: No tests Whereas most children will be able to take the tests in the School Hall, special provision has been made for some children who may require it, for example, due to a medical condition such as needing a writer due to a broken arm, suffering from severe vision loss, and other such specific needs which may require support on a one-to one basis, or the need to take their tests in a classroom with a small group of children, so they may feel less anxious. It is natural that your child may feel a little nervous taking the tests next week, but please reassure them that they are practice tests at this stage. We know from experience that practice at this time of year is very beneficial in making the children much more confident about completing the tests „for real‟ later in the year, when they will be familiar with the routines of where tests are conducted and what they will have to do. We would appreciate your support, particularly throughout next week, in ensuring that children come to school well-prepared with the usual stationery (including a ruler), that they are punctual and have had a good night‟s sleep. Many thanks, in advance, for your help and support in this. Countdown to Year 6 Standard Attainment Tests (SATs):14 weeks to go! “Literacy Matters and Numeracy Counts”. LITERACY MATTERS Last week’s answers Match up these pairs of words with the contracted form. Remember – Only use an apostrophe to show missing letters or that something belongs to someone. We NEVER use an apostrophe simply to make a plural noun. Numeracy Matters This week’s topic is Percentages. Percentages are a way to work out part of a number. Such as 25% of something is one quarter of it. Per cent means 'out of 100' The sign % stands for 'per cent' which means 'out of 100'. So: 40% means 40 out of 100 11% means 11 out of 100 Percentage of a shape This shape is divided into 100 equal parts. What percentage of the shape is shaded? Count and you will find that 40 of those 100 parts are shaded so therefore, 40% of this shape is shaded. (It doesn't matter which 40 parts are shaded). Remember, per cent means 'out of 100'. This shape is not divided into 100 equal parts. To work out the percentage of this shape that is shaded, you must first work out what each part represents. There are 20 equal parts, so each part represents 5%. 100% (the whole) ÷ 20 = 5% 6 of the parts are shaded, so 30% of the total shape is shaded. 6 x 5% = 30% Quiz Time 1. In a block of 100 flats, 35 flats have a blue front door. What percentage of the flats have a blue front door? 3.5% 35% 70% 2. What is 40% as a fraction? two fifths one fifth one half 3. What is one quarter as a percentage? 25% 20% 4% 4. Joe got 15 out of 25 in a maths test. Emma got 65%. Who got the better result? Joe Emma They both got the same result 5. 75% of the children in a football team are boys. What percentage are girls? 75% 50% 25%
