Finch Lab

Data Collection & Observations
Using your “beaks’” according to their design, pick up one piece of “food” and put it in
your bird “belly” (the cup). Forage for 30 seconds as quickly as you can. After 30
seconds, record how much “food” you collected in the appropriate position on the table
below.

1. Which tool collected the most small beads?
2. What type of food showed had the highest amount of predation?
3. How do these different tools represent different adaptations?
4. Which type of food(s) was the bird that collected the most amount of small
beads worst at collecting?
5. If the environment changed such that the food type from question 4 was
more abundant, what do you think would happen to the population of
that bird?
6. Does having a different shaped beak or different tool help reduce competition
between the birds searching for food? Explain why or why not.
