NEW YEARʼS RESOLUTIONS
by Arden Watson, MEA President
I have never put much stock in New Year’s Resolutions, but I do
continually throughout the year, establish goals for myself personally and
professionally. I spend time evaluating progress towards goals, and making
lists to keep me moving forward on many tasks. January seems to be the
month to take stock, either with resolutions or through reflection and goal
setting.
In this edition of the Frontline I have included some grant opportunities,
online class offerings, information that may help your financial health, and
a preview of the upcoming legislative session through WEA’s Legislative Agenda. Perhaps some of this
information will assist you as you prepare for the year ahead. Happy New Year!

WEAʼS LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
The Government Relations team has identified five key issue areas that could drive our work in the 2013
legislative session. These issue areas are: McCleary (Class Size/Workload), Salary/Compensation, Testing,
Evaluations, and Higher Education.
McCleary (Class Size / Workload)
• Preserve its focus on K-12 schools. We already are seeing numerous additional interests attempting to
insert themselves into this funding mandate.
• Focus our McCleary-related lobby efforts mostly on obtaining funding for class size reductions,
reductions in workloads through adequate staffing levels, and All-Day Kindergarten.
Salary/Compensation
• Pursue an across-the-board increase in compensation and salary for all members, with a particular
focus on improving salaries at the beginning teacher level.
• Support the work of the Compensation Technical Workgroup as outlined in its report.
Testing
• Secure passage of the ‘Parent Right to Know’ bill, a transparency and accountability bill that would
require districts to inform parents of, among other things, the number of instructional days devoted to
testing as well as the associated costs of administering the tests to their students.
• Participate in conversations around the introduction of the new common core standards assessments.
Evaluations
• Ensure no further policy changes are made to the existing evaluation law.
• Fund the new system so it functions as intended. This includes initial training and ongoing
professional development for teachers and principals on the complete evaluation process.
Higher Education
• Equal bargaining rights for community and technical college faculty.
• Full funding for two and four year higher education institutions.
