Event Booklet - Border War BBQ

WHAT IS A KCBS BBQ CONTEST?
THE KANSAS CITY BARBEQUE SOCIETY (KCBS), a nonprofit
organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbeque, is the world's largest organization of barbeque and
grilling enthusiasts with over 15,000 members worldwide.
KCBS sanctions over 400 barbeque contests coast-to-coast
throughout America.
A traditional sanctioned contest requires the teams to cook 4 meats
(Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork Butt, & Brisket). The contest operates under
proprietary KCBS Rules and regulations which are provided to the teams
prior to the contest. Entries are blind judged by KCBS certified judges
and scored for presentation, taste and tenderness.
Money and other awards are provided for the top scorers in each category. The combined top score for the four meats is crowned the Grand
Champion. Grand Champions of traditional sanctioned contests are eligible for entry into the American Royal Invitational Contest and the Jack
Daniels Invitational World Championship.

IN THE PAST
The Border War refers to a turbulent local history with its roots in
the American Civil War. A series of violent confrontations between
anti-slavery and pro-slavery factions in the Kansas Territory and
neighboring Missouri towns served as a proxy war between Northerners and Southerners over the issue of slavery in the United
States between 1854 and 1861. The time, known to history as
“Bleeding Kansas,” culminated in Kansas entering the Union as a
free state on January 29, 1861.

ADAIR CABIN
While you are in Osawatomie, the Foundation encourages you to visit
the Adair Cabin located in historic
John Brown Memorial Park. Reverend Samuel Adair, and his wife,
Florella, were peaceful abolitionists who came to Kansas and
settled near Osawatomie, an abolitionist community and a center
of conflict during “Bleeding Kansas.”
The Adair cabin was a station on
the Underground Railroad and
Florella’s half brother, John Brown, used this cabin as his headquarters. The cabin survived the Battle of Osawatomie where John Brown
and 30 free-state defenders fought 250 proslavery militia in 1856.
The Adair cabin has since been moved to the site of the Battle of
Osawatomie, preserved, and opened to the public. The Adair Cabin,
operated by the City of Osawatomie, is a Kansas State Historic Site
and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
RESTORE THE HOMESTEAD
In 1904, Charles Adair—son of Samuel and Florella—built a frame
farmhouse next to the Adair Cabin. Even though the cabin was relocated to its current site, the Adair farmhouse still stands today near
the original cabin site.
