They will be returning tired, but full of stories to share and fulfilled by the experience of having served others in great need. NEW this year . . . we have provided a link so that you will be able to interact with the group while they are away. Use this link to send your thoughts, encouragement and prayers. Likewise, the Youth will post to the page and include pictures to keep their church home family in touch with their activities. Please accept your invitation or bookmark the page: https://www.facebook.com/events/273079093044450/ PANTRY SUNDAY - JULY 10 On the 2nd Sunday of each month, we collect non-perishable food items for the All Peoples Interfaith Food Pantry located at the First Congregational Church in downtown Elgin. This is one of 18 food pantries in Elgin. Please add a couple extra items to your grocery cart on your next visit and drop them off at the Collection Zone baskets located in the entryway of the church. A shopping list of most needed items is available for you to take with you. Your generous participation is greatly appreciated! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - JULY 18-22 This year our kids will be at the Surf Shack where they will encounter God’s awesomeness through Bible stories and learn how we’re meant to experience an epic adventure each day. Children 3 years old to those who have just completed 5th grade are invited to attend. We will meet from July 1822, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Registration forms are located in the Literature Racks. Please see Linda Lowery to register. nwcommUNITY VBS brought together kids and their families from Burlington, rural Elgin, Hampshire, Huntley, and Pingree Grove. The kids learned all about Jesus and what he does for each us every day. They enjoyed four different sessions which included KidVid where they learned about a child like them who experienced Jesus in their own lives and received a Bible Buddy each day; Bible Quest - they got to walk on water; Games - they got to laugh and play all in Jesus’ name, and Imagination Station - they received a fun and meaningful craft each day. We ended each day the same way we started it, by praising Jesus! It was such a good time that the kids were already asking about next year. Cave Quest 2016 was indeed an over the top experience! Thank you for all your support! Wisdom Keepers You are invited to join this group of young seniors for “Pizza and a Program” Wednesday, July 20, at Noon Librarian Tish Calhamer offers great summer reads as well as an update of exciting services for seniors. We are in need of a salad and dessert to share, so if you are so inclined, please call the office. Thank you! Cornerstone Quilters The possibilities are endless when making a quilt, and the process can become very daunting when you’re not sure how to begin, so you stop before you get started. The Cornerstone Quilters have a passion for quilting, and they would love to share their knowledge with you to help you begin. Please join them on Tuesday, July 19, in the Youth Room from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. You are welcome to invite friends, family and neighbors of all ages. No experience is required and materials are provided. Please contact Margit Rippberger at [email protected], or Barbara Schening at [email protected] or at 847-494-2189, if you have any questions. They would love for you to join them! Serve Saturday - July 23 Did you know that Cornerstone members and friends regularly help man the client choice food pantry, Food for Greater Elgin every fourth Saturday of the month? During a food distribution shift (8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.), volunteers 12 years and older assist clients through the choice process and help maintain the warehouse as client’s shop for their food. One volunteer notes, “We provide food for hungry people and we receive food for our souls.” Food for Greater Elgin is located at 1553 Commerce Dr. on the northwest side of Elgin. A sign-up sheet is located at the Activity Center just outside the south end of the Worship Room doors, near the fellowship area. For more information, contact Linda Lowery at [email protected]. The work camp experience includes doing home repairs in poor neighborhoods. Founded in 1962, RUM is the outreach of 16 United Methodist and 4 other churches that work on a variety of ministries directed at showing God’s love throughout the Rockford area. The Mission of the Month (MOM) donations this month will support the work camp projects and also the general work of RUM which includes: rehabilitating houses through Rockford New Hope, Habitat for Humanity, and Zion Development; working for improved programming for the youth of the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Center; and supporting the long-term unemployed by establishing Promised Land Employment Service, a professional employment agency that has successfully served over 1,000 people per year in finding full-time employment. These are just a sampling of the ways in which God’s love is spread throughout the Rockford area through the ecumenical efforts of Rockford Urban Ministries. Donations to MOM can be made throughout the month by using envelopes provided by the Missions of the Month box on the stand in the fellowship area, or placed in the offering plate. Checks should be made out to Cornerstone Church with MOM noted on the memo line of the check, or indicate MOM if donating online. A HOME FOR A STRANGER There are a couple of Brazilian exchange students who are looking for homes in the Elgin area. Their acceptance into their study abroad program depends on lining up their accommodations. We’ve been approached by a neighboring church to see if a saint or saints of Cornerstone might be interested in welcoming a foreigner for a school year. I believe both students are male and about high school senior status. Please contact Pastor Jim for more info at the church office or by email at [email protected]. Leadership Incubator Pastor Jim is looking for 30 committed leaders/couples who are interested in playing leading roles in helping Cornerstone navigate the next chapter of our mission, or being sent out to help build up the kingdom of God wherever you are called. For the next year we will study two books, first Lead Like Jesus for Churches, a story about the mythical Beacon Hill Church told by Ken Blanchard, with discussion points in every chapter, and then in 2017, H3 Leadership: Humble, Hungry, Hustle, a book of principles by Catalyst organizer and leader Brad Lomenick. Meetings will be weekly, on Wednesday evening, Friday evening and/or Saturday mid-day. Participants should commit to regular attendance and be willing to join the team in taking responsibility for shaping and leading our ministries for the next phase (3-5 years?) of our life together. If you think God may be calling you to this adventure, contact Pastor Jim at the church office or [email protected]. Stepping Stones Position Available We are seeking a certified lead teacher for the fall session of the Stepping Stones Mixed Age class. For more information, please contact Linda Lowery at [email protected] or at 847-464-4673, ext. 11. On Sunday, July 3, in response to the holiday weekend, we will have only one worship service at 10:00 a.m. Set your clocks ahead or back, or however you’d like, but don’t come early, don’t be late and most of all don’t miss it! Red Bird Mission and Clinic in Kentucky Red Bird Mission and Clinic has been providing ministries in the region of the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Today the need still remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of this area. Red Bird strives to meet those needs through ministry in five areas: Education, Health & Wellness, Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity, and Community Housing Improvement. One way we can help is by saving Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for Education. The Mission redeems the labels and Box Tops for school supplies. Please drop these items in the basket at the Collection Zone located in the entryway. Your help is greatly appreciated!
