Bambara Primary School Issue 5 Term 1 5 April 2016 An Independent Public School Message from the Principal Dear Parents and Carers I hope you enjoyed looking through your child’s Literacy and Numeracy work sample folders as much as I did last week. Giving students the opportunity to reflect on their progress and achievement was an insightful exercise. I found students had a clear understanding of their strengths and the areas that they need to improve. I sensed that they were proud of their achievements and derived great enjoyment from the learning opportunities provided to them by their teachers. Equally pleasing was the clear and concise language used by students to explain the activity and the learning outcomes. This clarity comes about from the schools focus on visible learning where students know the what, why and how they learn. To support student learning, the school has adopted a whole school approach known as the ISTAR model for learning. It gives teachers the ‘how’ to teach based on 5 stages of lesson development. The focus for classroom teachers is to use this model and discuss each stage of a lesson which gives clarity and makes the learning visible to students. Teachers are currently trialling ISTAR during their daily math lessons. The term has been very productive and both students and teachers have worked really hard to achieve good learning outcomes. A reminder to parents of students in Year 3 and 5 that NAPLAN testing will commence in Week 3 of Term 2. If there are any families who intend to withdraw their child from any of the 5 tests then a discussion with the Principal is essential. Withdrawal forms are available and need to be returned to the school no later than Friday 8 April. Congratulations to Karen Wallis and her team of parents who ran the Scholastic Book Fair. Book sales totalled $2 800 with $700 in commission going towards the purchase of library books. Thank you to all the parents and carers who supported this wonderful initiative. The 2016 P & C committee, under the presidency of Amber Smithson, has been extremely busy and has one last event on its calendar this term. The P & C and school are inviting parents and students to the ANZAC day breakfast followed by the assembly. There is no charge for the breakfast however orders are due this Wednesday. I look forward to a great turnout to the breakfast starting at 7.30am in the undercover area and the ANZAC assembly which will be run by our Year 6 class commencing at 9.00am sharp on the grassed area along Alexander Road. There have not been any parking issues this term until yesterday morning. I was informed by a distressed parent that her Year 6 child was nearly run over by a parent who drove into the top staff car-park during drop off. Staff car parks are not for parent parking and the cross over is also out of bounds to parkers. Your cooperation is essential if we are to maintain a safe environment for our students. In closing I wish to thank parents and staff for a great first term and I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday. Just remember to keep up the reading, spelling and times tables practice. Year 6 students will read a Dr Seuss book of their choice to the PP students. They will then receive feedback from their peers about their reading. Dance Concert - The finale of 9 weeks of lessons from Jo at Edu Dance was held last Wednesday with a Dance Concert. All students eagerly anticipated the event which was well attended by parents and carers. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase all the students had learnt and there were some great moves as students made their way through a range of dances. There are some photos from each class on the next page. This Friday sees the end of yet another term and I hope everyone has a safe, happy and restful holiday. I am looking forward to seeing you in Term 2. Thank you students for all your hard work and thank you parents and carers for your ongoing support.
