Along with the leadership from Israel, Judi Corsaro, Chief Executive Director of the Charleston Jewish Federation toured Northwood Church and our school campuses. Mrs. Denise Deveaux has partnered with an Israeli teacher, Michal Heiman, from Hadera. Our sixth graders have been pen pals with Ms. Heiman’s students. It’s wonderful to see Northwood reaching out to the world! Saturday, April 22, Northwood participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new home constructed for a wounded veteran and his family. This joint project between Carnes Crossroads, Max Crosby Construction, and Operation Finally Home, was attended by Larry Evanoff, our Dir ector of Schools, and Northwood juniors Mary Pratt and McKenna Richards. McKenna lead the Pledge of Allegiance for the ceremony, while Mary sang the National Anthem. Eligible students and graduating seniors should have already received an invitation and sent in an R.S.V.P. We are looking forward to an evening of food and fellowship as we celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students! An Evening by the Sea Prom 2017 The Junior/Senior prom was held on Friday, April 28 at the South Carolina State Aquarium. Under the direction of Mrs. Vivian Tremaine, the 2017 Prom Committee did an excellent job planning every detail. A special thanks to Prom Chairperson, Ake’la Allen who showed gr eat leader ship and commitment to the project. Kris Collins and Reece Myers tied for prom king, while Jenna Andrews was crowned prom queen. Seniors Win Awards DAR Chapter Winner Senior Alis Burton received the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) “Good Citizen Award” for Northwood Academy. Selected based upon her dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism, Alis was also named the essay winner for the Eliza Lucas Pinckney Chapter for her essay on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” 2017 James F. Byrnes Foundation Scholar The James F. Byrnes Scholarship Program, established in 1949 to assist young South Carolinians who lost one or both parents to obtain a college education, selected senior Ian Villavicencio as one of seven Byr nes Scholar s. Ian r eceives an annual awar d of $3500 for four years towards his bachelor’s degree. 2017 Letters About Literature Winner Letters About Literature is a writing contest sponsored by the Library of Congress in which students write to the author of a work that impacted them in some way. This year, senior Savannah Hall was selected as the 2nd place winner for the state of South Carolina with her letter to author Andy Weir. She was recognized at an award ceremony at the State Library in Columbia on April 28. Oops! A few students were inadvertently left off the 3rd Quarter Honor Roll list. The students were also invited to perform at the Cultural Arts Program, Charleston JCC Without Walls. Nicholas Shawver played the “Theme from Schindler’s List” on his tenor saxophone. Makenna Bryant per for med an inter pr etive dance, while Alyssa Dukes sang “Dry Bones.” Makenna Bryant and Candace Herrman performed an interpretive dance to “Thy Will Be Done.” Rachel Revelise (Anne) and Nathan O’Brien (Peter ) per for med two scenes from The Diary of A nne Frank. A Journey Through American History Each year, our 8th grade class participates in a project called 'A Journey through American History', where they portray our founding fathers, inventors, writers, scientists, and others who have contributed to the growth of our nation! They spent many weeks studying, building, writing, and rehearsing. They proudly presented their work to our Lower School students, family and friends. GREAT JOB! Junior Betas Attend Leadership Summit Several members of the Junior Beta Club attended the Leadership Summit at Jekyll Island, GA in March. Nationally-known speakers encouraged them to stand up and be leaders in their schools and communities. They also participated in activities that allowed them to practice their interpersonal skills as they met and worked with Betas from around the region. One of the highlights of the trip came when Northwood Academy was announced as one of the top teams in the Rapid Response competition. Rapid Response Team members included Colby Carter, Collin Briscoe, Sophie Miller, Ali Eubanks, and Sadie Underwood. The J unior Beta Club is under the sponsorship of Mrs. Rebecca Gentry. Need Uniforms for Next Year? The Northwood Academy National Junior Beta Club is pleased to announce that they will be selling used uniforms this summer for only $5 per item. The sale will be held at the Upper School cafeteria on Saturday, July 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Not only will this save our Northwood families some money and clean out some closets, but it will also provide funds for leadership training and service projects. Your help is needed! We will be collecting used uniforms on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, May 22-24 in the Upper School courtyard from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Clean uniforms with no stains, tears, or frays will be gratefully accepted, so save those uniforms!
