Niemans’ credits their balance philosophy for their remarkable triumphs. “Our balanced scoring is a product of how we play defensively. When they are in there for three or four minutes, they’ve got to be going all out. It’s hard to go that speed for more than that amount of time. That gives us balanced minutes, and then that results in balanced scoring. Their appointed marked the first time in Panther athletic history for co-head coaches in any sport. 2011 NCAA Division II Midwest Region Quarterfinalist 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Finalist Seasons of Firsts First NCAA appearance in KWC history – 2011 First Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship game in history – 2012 Winningest coaches by percentage in history at 59.6 Produced the highest two-year win total with 34 – 2011 and 2012 Reached highest NCAA region ranking in history at No. 7 – 2011 Capture first postseason victory in history – 2012 Set the single game record for points with 115 in overtime win at Bellarmine – 2012 The husband and wife team of Caleb and Nicole Nieman enters their third season as co-head women’s coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College after compiling the most successful back-toback record breaking seasons in Panther history. The 2012 Panthers compiled their second straight 17-win season with a 17-13 mark as they pulled off two one-point upsets including over No. 16-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament to reach the championship game for the first time in KWC history. During the season while using 22 different lineups, they also set the single-game scoring record with a 115-113 overtime victory at Bellarmine. All 12 players competed in 24-plus games while averaging double-figures in minutes with eight seeing action in all 30 contests. The couple came to KWC as assistants to then head coach Ron Williams in the summer of 2009 from Michigan where they combined for six years serving as co-head coaches in high school and two years of college coaching experience at a Division III powerhouse. Prior to moving to Owensboro, Nicole spent two seasons as an assistant and head junior varsity coach at the legendary Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. She helped lead the Knights to 35 wins in two years including a 19-8 record in 2009 where they set the NCAA Division III single game attendance record 4,395. At the prep level the Nieman’s inherited a 2-19 team at Greenville High School in Greenville, Mich., and proceeded to take the Yellow Jackets to back-to-back Class A district playoff wins for the first time since the 1998 season. For their accomplishments, they were named the Area’s Coach of the Year. Caleb, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, worked for the Grand Rapids MVP Sportsplex supervising over 700 athletes including collegiate and professional teams and athletes plus the Michigan State University’s Athletic Strength and Conditioning program. He is currently featured on Sports Illustrated’s website (www.si.com/training) introducing cutting edge, sport specific training techniques to improve athlete’s performance. Caleb graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s in kinesiology from Michigan State University in 2009. Nicole, a native of Marlette, Mich. graduated from Aquinas College in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in learning disabilities and a master’s in kinesiology from Michigan State University in 2009. They have one daughter Lilly. The Niemans’ guided KWC to a 17-10 record in 2011 and the first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament in their 36-year history. The 17-wins tied for the third-most in history as they earned KWC’s highest finish in the GLVC East Division with a second place tie.
